Tingo María National Park, 50 years
Prologue
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of Peru’s protected natural areas (PNA) is certainly a
great privilege, and not only because of the festive atmosphere surrounding the entire family
of the Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP) [National
Service of Protected Natural Areas] and its partners, but also because it is the highest expression
of decades of work done for the love of conservation.
We at the SERNANP are proud to share this book with you, a work that seeks to transport you,
if only for a few moments, to the Tingo Maria National Park, home of the Bella Durmiente (the
Sleeping Beauty, which is the name given the contour of the mountain tops in the park) that
will, this 2015, celebrate its 50 years of existence as a protected natural area, the pride of the
department of Huanuco and all of Peru.
Being the second oldest PNA in the country has been a real test for Tingo Maria but also a great
satisfaction since, year after year, the park’s management has been working ever closer with the
local community, the federal government, and even private enterprise in an effort to encompass
all sectors of society in the virtuous cycle of conservation.
Thanks to that resolve, the Tingo Maria National Park is today both a tourist magnet for showing
off the blessings of our central jungle and a source of infinite possibilities for sustainable
development and for improving the quality of life for the people living there, who are the primary
beneficiaries of this incredible fountain of life.
Moreover, thanks to the support of private enterprise, we have been able to log and monitor the
biodiversity in this national park, and the results of those labors reveals that within the 4,700 +
hectares making up Tingo Maria, more than 1435 wildlife species are living in harmony with humans.
7
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
On account of these and many other reasons, we are inviting you to visit this hidden treasure of
Peru. I am certain that the next time you are in our country, you will head straight to Tingo Maria
to hike upon its trails and to try the delicious foods made hand in hand with nature.
Prefacio
Preface
Beyond the unqualified scenic beauty of the Bella Durmiente and the sense of wonder
stirred by the owls living with the Cueva de las Lechuzas [Screen Owl Cave], Tingo Maria
National Park – Peru’s second oldest protected natural area – fulfills an essential role through
conserving the biodiversity in this area of the country.
A great diversity of plant and animal species, some of which are threatened on a worldwide
basis, others native to Peru and the department of Huanuco, and still more that are transient
visitors from both the northern and southern hemispheres, are protected within its dense
forests, rigorously conserved for half a century.
The partnership between the firm, Empresa de Generación Huallaga (EGH)-Odebrecht, and the
SERNANP has made the most complete registration of flora and fauna ever conducted thus
far in the Tingo Maria National Park possible. This book, which has been written in honor of the
park’s first 50 years, is the result of this massive undertaking that will doubtlessly contribute
to managing the area and will substantially improve the understanding of the valuable natural
heritage that it preserves.
What is more, this information will help to create management tools used for different aspects
of the park, like specialized tourism promotion (bird, orchid, and butterfly watching) and
scientific research, and to increase the knowledge we have on the biodiversity found within
its confines.
For Empresa de Generación Huallaga (EGH)-Odebrecht, we feel privileged to join with the
Tingo Maria National Park for its 50th anniversary celebration through this book that is not just
a showcase of its natural wealth and a summary of the work carried out, but also a means of
promoting the benefits and opportunities that the area provides its inhabitants in the way of
sustainable activity development inside the park and within the buffer zone.
Foreword
It is difficult to forget the view from the airplane where we first saw the emblematic “Sleeping
Beauty” during our first visit to Tingo María National Park in 2011. Once on the ground we
had the luck to visit the “Cueva of the Lechuzas” and observe oilbirds; a nocturnal species
that detect fruit in the forest using echolocation. In addition to these curious inhabitants Tingo
Maria National Park also protects important montane forest ecosystem that contains a large
biodiversity of species, produces water, stores carbon, and supports the livelihoods of many
villagers. Therefore, we congratulate with enthusiasm the Natural Protected Areas National
Service (SERNANP) on the 50th Anniversary of the creation of Tingo Maria National Park.
Today, this protected area is the cornerstone for the better management of the natural resources
in a landscape that is dominated by agriculture, forests and the Huallaga River. The Huanuco
region is growing in importance due to the recent development of the Chaglla Hydroelectric
Plant, therefore, the collaboration between SERNANP and Odebrecht in Tingo Maria National
Park is a important element for the sustainability of this important piece of infrastructure. This
alliance is also important as critical support in the long-term management of the area in a context
of continued expansion of illegal activities in the Park. At the same time, it´s a good example of
an efficient public and private alliance to improve regional sustainability.
We wish to congratulate the authors for their work on the book Tingo Maria National Park,
50 Years. We hope that this publication not only helps to record the value and importance
of the Park, but also makes it possible to motivate present and future generations to play
an active part in the conservation of the biological heritage of the region.
Introduction
After crossing the towering Andes Mountains along the road that winds around their steep
slopes, you come to the Carpish Tunnel, the doorway to the lands belonging to the Chunatahua
Indian tribe and a magical region bursting with colors, life, and unforgettable experiences.
It is in this territory that you find the Tingo Maria National Park (TMNP), located in the upper
jungle of the Huanuco Region. It covers an area of 4,777.87 hectares and is the second oldest
protected natural area in Peru, representing half a century of constant learning about conservation,
development, and co-existence with the local population.
These first five decades of existence as a PNA are the result of the selfless work of the park rangers
who have dedicated years of their lives protecting the Bella Durmiente, the legend of which says
that it is the product of the impossible love between Lusha and Pucco, mythical beings who
changed the shape of the mountain found in the national park to that of a sleeping woman.
19
The collaborative work of the SERNANP and public and private institutions produced a detailed
record of the biological diversity sheltered in Tingo Maria, an amazing 291 bird species, 106 orchid
species, and 320 butterfly species. The book you have in your hands showcases this natural wealth
through high quality photographs.
The amazing diversity of species and countryside has turned the national park into the number one
tourist attraction in the Huanuco Region, which, consequently, helps to fuel the economy of the
city of Tingo Maria and the surrounding areas since more than 70,000 people visit the park every
year. Its conservation has been made possible thanks to the efforts of the Management Board and
park rangers, as well as the participation of the local population that has started up small tourismoriented
ventures.
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
This book, The Tingo Maria National Park, 50 Years, describes the history, natural wealth, and
challenges facing this protected area as well as reinforces our identity as children of the Bella
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
Mr. César Canales, 87, was one of the first park rangers in TMNP.
Being a park ranger has not lost its attraction through
the passing of generations.
Zealously conserved by its bygone inhabitants, conquered by the Incan armies, and coveted
by the Conquistadores and missionaries, Peru’s central Amazon rainforest has seen a
turbulent past. This succession of events has created a cultural melting pot and, together with
the region’s natural characteristics, has shaped a territory brimming with opportunities.
The founding of the city of Tingo Maria in 1938 launched the rapid colonization of the region,
promoted in large part by the government policy that pushed for the privatization of property
as the primary means of increasing agriculture and livestock breeding. The area’s incredible
diversity of plants and animals was, furthermore, the reason for the boom in the fur and
timber trade. It was in that context which the “new” and strategically located city of Tingo
Maria became the gateway to the Amazon. During that time, the word “conservation” was
hardly heard in Peru, yet slowly but surely a current began to flow which attempted to get the
politicians and the everyday citizen to see the environmental problems facing Peru.
33
Around 1940, the government began defining and enforcing property laws in this part of the
country, and during that period a series of parcels was reserved for the future creation of a
national park, specifically the lands around the Cueva de las Pavas, which today is found in the
protected area’s buffer zone.
The Tingo Maria National Park was initially declared the Cueva de las Lechuzas National
Reserve by then president Manuel A. Odría under Supreme Decree No. 061 of October 16,
1950. Based on the recommendations of the National Commission for the Protection of
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
adyacentes a dichas formaciones naturales.
Nature, the president established the boundaries of the reserve at 100 meters around the
cave in order to protect the oilbirds, fruit eating nocturnal birds that were confused with the
screech owl back then.
A decade later, another national reserve was created in an area that included the Cueva de
las Lechuzas and, in 1963, the Forest Act entered into force, under which national parks were
included as a protection category. Subsequently, in 1965, the TMNP was created by way of
Law No. 15574 enacted on May 14, 1965.
This law granted the classification of national park to two regions near the city of Tingo
Maria: the mountains forming the Bella Durmiente and the Cueva de las Lechuzas. At the
time of the classification, the park’s boundaries had not been set, only stating that the
forests adjacent to the two natural formations were included. In wasn’t until 2000 that the
park was finally demarcated and its area set at 4,777.80 hectares.
After its creation, the park was managed by the Comité de Conservación del Parque Nacional
Tingo María y Áreas Similares (CCOPANAS) [Tingo Maria National Park and Similar Areas
Conservation Committee], an institution formed by famous people from Tingo Maria and that
cared for the PNA from 1975 to 1990. Currently, Tingo Maria is part of the Sistema Nacional
de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SINANPE) [National System of Protected
Natural Areas] and is being managed by the SERNANP, which is assisted by Management
Committees made up of members of the local population who have organized themselves
into park rangers to safeguard this priceless jewel of nature.
The forests and their fruits are part of the biological
diversity in the park and moreover a chance for
applying the principles of sustainable use.
Sunrise in the Bella Durmiente cloud forest. Under its shadows, hidden in the thick
foliage, a Peruvian cock of the rock – Peru’s national bird – prepares itself to perform
its loud and alluring mating dance that, if successful, will guarantee the perpetuation of
his family. A blue morpho butterfly flutters among the leaves of a cedar tree a few meters
away looking for some fruit. In the caves, the oilbirds are resting after a long night of fruit
searching. Suddenly, an explosion of sounds – birds, insects, monkeys, and running water
– awakens the forest all at once. The sun appears over the mountaintops and creeps its
way over the treetops, burning off the thick fog that covers the forest. Another day begins
in the Tingo Maria National Park.
This moment has forever been repeated on the eastern slopes of the Andes, one of the
most productive and biodiverse ecosystems the world over, characterized by its high level
of precipitation and nearly permanent shroud of fog created by evapotranspiration.
49
The Peruvian yungas – the most widespread ecoregion in the Tingo Maria National Park
– creates a band of montane forests that starts at the Huancabamba Depression and
marches southerly across the Andean slopes at an elevation between 600 and 3500 meters,
covering an area of nearly 250,000 km2. These forests are among the richest on the planet
in terms of biological diversity and endemism and are home to several important species,
like the Peruvian cock of the rock and the Andean bear.
Even though the yungas possesses enormous biological diversity, it is a region of great
fragility, threatened by the constant growth of Amazonian cities as well as the unchecked
use of natural resources. Its forests protect a spectacular community of plant species that
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
y aprender a conservarla.
have adapted to the constant high levels of humidity. It is here that the water produced
by the forests builds up enough force to become small streams, eventually turning into
larger rivers that thunder down the mountainsides, bringing with them the sediment that
fertilizes the Amazonian plain.
Land of mountains
The national park is located on a karst massif that consists of a series of limestone relieves
in the shape of an arch, whose convex section faces the city of Tingo Maria. The resulting
PNA is characterized by its steep, rugged slopes and narrow valleys in the upper reaches,
such as what we find in the Upper Huallaga River Valley. Since these mountains have been
well protected, they shelter remnants of the upper jungle primary forest, where a peculiar
biological diversity thrives, especially the little know plant species growing in the hollows
and caverns.
These are some of the reasons why one of Tingo Maria’s strong points is its ability to
cling to its natural treasures, in spite of human intervention. If we were to act intelligently,
supported by scientific research, and conserve the environmental processes, we can
increase the value of this beautiful region and preserve the priceless ecosystem services
it provides for the generations to come.

The yungas: the source of life
Water, genetic resources, food, spirituality, and tourism income. The Tingo Maria
National Park, like all well conserved forests, supplies the people living nearby
important services and is a hub of development and opportunities.
While the most notable environmental service, at first glance, is related to its scenic beauty
and, therefore, harnessing it leads to tourism, there are others that are equally important, like
the regulation of the climate and water. An amazing diversity of trees and other plants lives in
the yungas, the sustainable use of which would guarantee the livelihoods of a large section of
the local population. This diversity, from an intangible perspective, is furthermore linked to the
people identifying themselves with the land, enjoying the countryside, resting and relaxing, and
being close to nature.
Another noteworthy service from the forests of Tingo Maria is the protection of the sources of
fresh water, and enough of that resource is produced there to satisfy the needs of the districts of
Mariano Dámaso Beraún and Rupa Rupa. The water is managed by way of water usage rights
(14 in total – 4 inside the PNA and 10 within the buffer zone), and a total of 2,967,039 m3 of water
is produced from them, benefiting 82,591 people.
The capacity of the forests to capture carbon is another service that could become an asset for
the Huanuco Region, if it were to sell carbon credits. This is one way of attaining benefits while
keeping the forest intact and preserving the biological diversity.
55
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
Along different lines, if nature tourism were to be developed, it would be possible to promote the
engagement of the local population, consisting of the offer of tourism services and activities.

within the Park offer potential uses for both tourism and
scientific research.
The flora and fauna living in the TMNP is significant in quantity and furthermore typical of
the montane forest ecosystem. The results of the 2014 biological survey carried out under
the agreement between the SERNANP and Empresa de Generación Huallaga-Odebrecht
revealed that there are 656 plant species – including 106 species of orchids – 33 amphibian
species, 29 reptile species, 291 bird species, 76 mammal species, and 320 butterfly species.
From this enormous diversity, there are 25 nationally and 20 internationally threatened species.
50 are endemic to Peru, with 10 of those native just to the department of Huanuco. The most
noteworthy amphibian species are: Nymphargus mariae, Pristimantis adiastolus, Pristimantis
minutulus, and Oreobates saxatilis, which have only been found inside this national park, never
having been recorded in any other of Peru’s protected natural areas.
67
There are six new species that are awaiting confirmation to be registered in the annals of
science: two frogs - Pristimantis sp. nov. and Scinax sp. nov; one snake - Atractus sp. nov.; the
Gecko Pseudogonatodes sp. nov.; and two lizards - Enyalioides sp. nov. and Cercosaura sp. nov.
The two most representative bird species are the oilbird (Steatornis caripensis) and the Peruvian
cock of the rock (Rupicola peruvianus). BirdLife international has classified the Tingo Maria
National Park as an IBA (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area) in the Tropical Andes because
it shelters a large variety of birds native to the Peruvian yungas, in particular the blue-headed
macaw (Primolius couloni) and cerulean-capped manakin (Lepidothrix coeruleocapilla). This is
a rather important facet of the park for bird watchers with regards to the fact that while the
TMNP may not be home to as many bird species as are found in other Peruvian PNAs, it is a
relatively small area in which you can find 25 threatened species, endemic and/or southern
and northern migratory species, 13 raptors, and 6 macaws or parrots.
Tingo María National Park, 50 years
Butterflies add a touch of color and
distinction to the forests, but they also
perform the essential role of pollinating,
thereby assuring the continuance of
plant communities.

When it comes to mammals, the stars are the pacarana (Dinomys branickii), a rodent
threatened worldwide yet that is relatively common in the park, the Allen’s olingo (Bassaricyon
alleni), a fairly unknown but abundant species, the peccary (Pecari tajacu), and the primates,
represented mainly by the Peruvian night monkey (Aotus miconax) and the Peruvian spider
monkey (Ateles chamek).
There are also more than 320 species of butterflies that are incredibly important for pollination
and a barometer of the state of health of the Tingo Maria yungas. Of course, the blue morpho
(Morpho sp.) is the most famous of them all, and you can easily find them fluttering above
the trails and around the shores of bodies of water.
The park plays a very important role centered on conserving unique species of plants, and it
is the only PNA in Peru where 31 endemic plants are found. Protecting these for the future
is a task that entails the involvement of the public and private sectors plus local populations,
proper management, sustainable use, and scientific research.
Nature tourism and animal observation are
two activities in which visitors can engage
while at the park.
Tourism – the industry without chimneys – is one of the main sustainable activities in the
PNAs, as well as being one of the primary environmental services they offer, because as
the biodiversity of a region is conserved, its economy will continue to grow.
The Tingo Maria National Park has embraced the principles of sustainable tourism for its
own conservation and found in it a tool to strengthen the local identity, even going as far
as attaining the recognition of its natural, social, and cultural values from the surrounding
population; what is more, its visitors return home with an unforgettable experience about
the countryside and the culture as well as a deeper understanding of the threats it is facing.
In 2014 alone, 64,719 people visited the park, making it the fifth most popular PNA in Peru,
and an amazing 98% of that figure was Peruvians. This stature has encouraged the startup
of different local businesses, including visitor transportation, food, lodging, interpretation,
guides, and environmental education.
81
Furthermore, the population, which has organized itself into Rural Community Tourism
Committees, has begun to engage in the business of tourism, offering lodging, food, and
guide services. In that context, community members are following the trend of providing
visitors experiences in natural areas through which the communities themselves benefit
directly from tourism and their members’ quality of life is improved, as does their
Along these line, the Tingo Maria National Park boasts plenty of tourist attractions on
account of its scenic beauty, such as the odd rock formation that looks like a resting woman
and the cave system known as the Cueva de las Lechuzas located near the entrance to the
The Cueva de las Lechuzas is the park’s most popular
attraction every year.
park and declared one of the most spectacular natural formations in the country. It is like an
underground cathedral due to its size, and the stalagmites and stalactites are this temple’s
decorations. While it has not yet been completely explored, we know that it extends at least
400 meters into the bowels of the mountain.
In addition, there are several small grottos in the walls near the entrance to the cave where
small parrots, swallows, and bats live. This cavern is known regionally, nationally, and
internationally as a can’t miss tourist attraction in the area, and both Peruvian and foreign
tourists flock to it each year.
Other park attractions include the Juan Santos Atahualpa Trail that leads visitors to a spot
where Peruvian cocks of the rock perform their mating dance as well as to the “tragadero”,
a fissure that literally swallows up the Santa River; this then runs for another 5 km under
the mountain before entering the Cueva de las Lechuzas and later joining the Monzon River.
An important sector is Tres de Mayo and its tourist circuit which includes one of the longest
suspension bridges in the province of Leoncio Prado (more than 85 meters) and a close up
view of the Tres de Mayo River that has different natural pools and three waterfalls: Gloria
The confines of the park are the stage
upon which humans and nature can
interact in order to build a more
eco-friendly future.
Close to 60,000 people live in the nearby surroundings of the national park, and most
of those in Tingo Maria, which is the provincial capital and one of the largest cities
in the Peruvian Amazon. This region has historically been affected by intense population
growth because it has a great supply of natural resources. Recently, thanks to a rational
management policy involving the local population, the threats have been mitigated, yet before
we let our guard down, it is necessary to enforce land use planning and ecological-economic
zoning processes in order to regulate the territory. This measure would help to contribute to
guaranteeing the increased co-existence between and among the different stakeholders and
interests in the area, which should positively affect the park’s management.
For that purpose, the SERNANP has held different workshops with the local population to
inform and coordinate with them, to listen to their concerns, and to engage them further in
managing the park and in sustainably using its natural resources. The city of Tingo Maria’s
strategic location as the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon and the starting point of the
Fernando Belaúnde Highland (formerly called the Marginal de la Selva) has turned it into the
second most important city in the region, after Huanuco.
If we want to understand the dynamics of this region, then we must bear in mind that small
scale farming is the basis of the economy. The most important crops grown there are coffee,
maize, bananas, cassava, beans, taro, cocona, cocoa, tangarines, oranges, and key limes.
As for livestock, cows and sheep are primarily raised.
The TMNP has started an awareness raising program with the local populace in the special
use and buffer zones in which the development model centers on the harmonious existence
between humans and nature. The main emphases have been the benefits of conservation
and rational use of the PNA’s natural resources and other assets.
One interesting development possibility for the people living there would be using the
national park as a symbol for creating a mark under which they can sell their organic
produce, whether coffee, cocoa, honey, etc. The goal would be to have a seal that certifies a
product’s origin and the environmental values of the goods and services produced or offered
within and without the PNA and that is co-managed by the local population.
