Maghera

12th century medieval church

The main reason for our visit to Maghera was to photograph the 10th century round tower. Situated behind the modern 19th century church is the ruin of a possible 12th century medieval church. The west gable, pictured below left, and the north wall stand to their original height, but only the foundations remain of the east and south walls. There is a window in the north wall, but very little remains of the original entrance, see bottom image. The church stands within a circular walled enclosure which may have been a monastic cashel.
