Maghera

12th century medieval church

The main reason for our visit to Maghera was to photograph the 10th century round tower. Situated behind the modern 19th century church is the ruin of a possible 12th century medieval church. The west gable, pictured below left, and the north wall stand to their original height, but only the foundations remain of the east and south walls. There is a window in the north wall, but very little remains of the original entrance, see bottom image. The church stands within a circular walled enclosure which may have been a monastic cashel.

Situated: From Newcastle head north on the Castlewellan Road (A50). After 1.5 Kilometres turn right onto the B180 for Maghera. Then 0.5 K turn right onto Carrigs Road. The Church and Tower are on your left.
