Easy Giraffe Amigurumi Free Crochet Pattern

I have never crocheted a giraffe until I designed this one. I really couldn’t be any happier with how this crochet giraffe pattern turned out. Scroll on down for the full free pattern.

Also, here’s a little trivia for you. Do you know what the little horn like things on giraffe’s head are called? They aren’t called horns, they are called ossicones. I did not know that. I wondered what they were called because for some reason, horns didn’t seem correct to me. So, now you know.

This free amigurumi pattern is so much fun to crochet.

Is Crocheting Amigurumi Hard?

Crocheting amigurumi is definitely an art and a skill that takes practice to learn. The biggest issue can come when you are trying to sew on all the separate pieces.

I highly recommend making all the pieces first and getting some straight pins and lining up all the individual pieces and pinning them to the body before you actually sew them on.

This way if you want to slightly move something over you will be able to. And, you see what everything looks like before you attach it.

Other than that, Amigurumi typically consists of basic crochet stitches. Really, amigurumi is made up of mostly single crochet stitches and decreasing in single crochet.

So, if you know how to single crochet, single crochet 2 stitches together and make a magic ring / circle, you are all set!

Amigurumi is a skill like anything else, the more you do it and practice, the better you will be at it.

But, for an amigurumi pattern, I’d say this giraffe crochet pattern is really an easy project.

About the Amigurumi Giraffe Design

Want to know what the best thing is about this cute crochet giraffe? The head and body are crocheted in 1 piece! I love that because it means 1 less piece to have to line up and sew on.

I didn’t make it to have a long neck. The longer the neck is, the more support it would need and he might not be able to hold his head up that way. But, I think it turned out adorable anyway and is a really cute giraffe.

I used I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby in yellow and brown. It’s a super soft, worsted weight yarn that works great for amigurmi. It’s a 100% acrylic yarn but it really is one of the softest acrylics that I’ve found.

But, any worsted-weight yarn would work. I love using yarn that I have on hand. This was actually some leftover yarn that I used for this stuffed animal.

This free giraffe crochet pattern would make for the perfect gift for any animal loving child. Pair it with a baby blanket and it would even make for a great baby gift at a baby shower. It’s the perfect size to decorate a baby’s nursery sitting on a table or dresser.

Head and body ( 1 single piece) –

With Yellow yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Round 3: * sc in 1 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (18)

Round 4: * sc in 2 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (24)

Round 5: * sc in 3 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (30)

Round 6: * sc in 4 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (36)

Round 7: * sc in 5 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (42)

Round 8 -17: sc in each st around (42)

Insert safety eyes between rows 11 & 12, 6 stitches apart

Round 18: * sc in 5 st, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (36)

Round 19: * sc in 4 st, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (30)

Begin stuffing head

Stuff the rest of the head and body. Make sure to add enough to the neck area to support and hold up the neck.

Round 45: * sc in 2 st, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (18)

Finish stuffing, if needed.

Round 47: sc2tog around (6)

Cut yarn and close bottom, weaving in ends.

Nose – With yellow yarn

Round 1: ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 3 st, 2 sc in last st, turn your piece and work stitches into the other side of the chains, sc in each chain until last chain, 2 sc in last chain space ( 12)

Round 2: do NOT turn piece, work in the round ( or oval), 2 sc, sc in 3 st, 2 sc in 3 st, sc in 3 st, 2 sc in last 2 st (18)

Round 3: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in 6 st, 2 sc in 3 st, sc in 6 st, 2 sc in last 2 st (24)

Work in the Back Loop Only of each stitch for round 4 only leaving the front loops unworked.

Round 4: sc in each st around (24)

Round 5-7: sc in each st around (24)

Cut yarn and leave a long tail. Set piece aside.

Ears – Make 2: With yellow yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: * sc in 1 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (9)

Round 3: sc in each st around (9)

Round 4: * sc in 2 st, 2 sc in next st* repeat * to * around (12)

Round 5: sc in each st around (12)

Cut yarn and leave a tail. Set aside. Repeat for the second ear.

Ossicones (their Horns) – Make 2:

Starting with brown yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: * sc , 2 sc * repeat * to * around (9)

Round 3 – 4: sc in each st around (9)

change to yellow yarn

Round 5: * sc, sc2tog * repeat * to * around (6)

Round 6: sc in each st around (6)

Stuff

Round 7 – 8: sc in each st around (6)

Finish stuffing.

Cut yarn and leave tail. Set aside. Repeat for the second ossicone.

Arms – Make 2

Starting with brown yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12)

Round 3 – 5: sc in each st (12)

Switch to yellow yarn

Round 6 – 10: sc in each st (12)

Round 11: * sc in 2 st, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (9)

Begin to stuff arm

Round 12 – 15: sc in each st (9)

Round 16: * sc in 1 st, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (6)

Round 17 – 19: sc in each st (6)

Finish stuffing arm

Pinch top closed and work 3 sc across top. Cut yarn and leave tail. Set aside. Repeat for the second arm.

Legs – Make 2

Starting with brown yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12)

Round 3: * sc, 2 sc* repeat * to * around (18)

Round 4: * sc in 2 st, 2 sc* repeat * to * around (24)

Round 5 – 6: sc in each st around (24)

Switch to yellow

Round 7 – 8: sc in each st around (24)

Round 9: * sc, sc2tog* repeat * to * around (16)

Stuff leg

Round 10: * sc2tog * repeat * to * around (8)

Round 11 – 12: sc in each st around (8)

Finish stuffing, if needed.

Cut yarn and leave tail. Set aside. Repeat for the second leg.

Spots – With Brown Yarn

Spot #1 (small spots) – Make 2

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around, sl st into 1st st (12)

Cut yarn leave a long tail to sew onto giraffe

Spot #2 – Make 1

Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Round 3: * sc, 2 sc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (18)

Cut yarn leave a long tail to sew onto giraffe

Assembly –

*Note on the ears – I fold the bottom sides together and sew just across the bottom to make them look more like giraffe ears.

Then I attached the ossicones to the top of the head, between the ears.

Sometimes it is easier for me to use the straight pins and pin all the pieces to the head before I sew them on, to make sure they are lined up correctly.

Although, I have just sewn them own with out pinning them on first.

Lightly stuff the nose with poly fil. Using the eyes as guide, stitch the nose on, adding more stuffing as you go.

Now, line the ears up and sew them to the head.

Sew on the arms and legs to each side of the body using the picture as a reference.

For the finishing touches. I added the spots. You can randomly place the different sizes on the giraffe’s belly or look at my picture as a guide. ( I actually hot glued mine on, because I didn’t want to sew them on, LOL.) And, yes, they are very secure with hot glue!

Weave in any ends if there are any left.
