Joy (Katakana: ジョイ, Rōmaji: Joi) is a young woman who lives in Hong Kong, she can most often be seen around Aberdeen riding her motorcycle. She is confident and very strong-willed, and often freely speaks her mind.

Shenmue II[edit]

Joy is well known in the Aberdeen area primarily because of her father who is a well established businessman and who also trades with Master Chen in Yokosuka. Because of this business connection she knows Master Chen, referring to him as "Uncle Chen", and was a childhood friend of Guizhang's, Also because of her father's prominence in the area a lot of people know her so she has many connections. She is also friends with Ren and the various Heavens members such as Wong.

She first meets Ryo whilst almost running him over with her motorcycle at the Worker's Pier where she scolds him for not paying attention. Despite their initially bad first meeting, Joy becomes interested in helping Ryo and does so on several occasions such as showing him to a place to sleep, pointing Ryo in the right direction after his bag is stolen, and getting him a job at the Fortune's Pier.

She does however get frustrated when Ryo acts coldly towards her and doesn't want to involve her in his affairs, although the reason for Ryo's attitude is likely connected to what happened to Nozomi back in Yokosuka when she was put in danger because of his actions. Despite this, she persists in befriending Ryo and the two do become good friends.

Joy and Wong follow Ryo and Ren to Kowloon and try to help them in their continued search for Yuanda Zhu. Eventually Joy is captured by the Yellow Heads and held in the Yellow Head Building, forcing Ryo to fight Baihu in order to secure her freedom.

Shenmue III[edit]

During the events of Shenmue III Joy has returned back to Hong Kong, but once Ryo has reached Niaowu he is able to call her from the telephone at Hotel Niaowu. She is frustrated with Ryo for not seeming to have any intention to come back to Hong Kong, to which Ryo says he isn't sure on what he will do yet but in return for the help Joy gave him he can select any of the following:

  • Teach Technique - Joy is not impressed with the suggestion of being taught martial arts at all.
  • Buy Dinner - Joy likes the idea and suggests some places to go to have dinner, but is not impressed when Ryo keeps suggesting places he remembers for having gotten into fights there.
  • Give Present - initially Joy seems slightly flustered that Ryo would offer to get her a present, but then she is not very impressed with the kinds of gifts Ryo is suggesting.

In another conversation Joy will be frustrated that Ryo has not made contact since leaving Hong Kong, for which Ryo will apologise and then can talk about the following topics:

  • Ren - Joy is not surprised to hear that Ren followed Ryo to Niaowu, and tells Ryo to play nice with him. Despite Ryo's assertions to the contrary Joy thinks the two make a good pair and should try to have some fun.
  • Joy - After telling each other that they are fine, Ryo and Joy have a slightly awkward conversation where they don't know what really to say to each other.
  • Wong - Joy says that Wong is getting along fine, and reminds Ryo that, because of the kind of life Wong has had so far, he is a tough kid who can take care of himself.

Side Story[edit]

Joy features in one of the Side Story comics which can be unlocked in the Xbox version of Shenmue II, or in the Shenmue I & II version. In this story Joy and Guizhang are talking on the phone where Joy reminisces about a time when they were younger when Guizhang saved her from kidnappers.

Shenmue the Animation[edit]

Joy also appears in Shenmue The Animation, first appearing in Dignified, the sixth episode of the series and appearing throughout the Hong Kong arc of the series.

During the sixth episode Joy first meets Ryo at the harbor when she almost runs him over with her motorcycle and helps Ryo in many of the same ways as she does in the game by helping Ryo find a place to stay at the Come Over Guest House and breaking up his fight with the Poison Brothers. She also tells Ryo that Wong would be the one who stole his bag but refuses to help him find Wong as she wants to protect him from harm. Later on, when she is certain Ryo won't hurt the others, she tells Ryo where to find Wong so he can get his bag back.

During Future, the seventh episode, Joy runs into Ryo whilst he is looking around for some martial artists and recommends Ryo to visit a street performer, Zongquan Bai, who she saw performing martial arts in the Golden Shopping Mall. Sometime after this Ren also runs into her and asks her to tell him about the Japanese guy Wong had told him about, but Joy says rather than she telling him about Ryo, he should go and meet him himself and that he is probably over at the Golden Quarter. Later on in the episode Joy invites Ryo to get something to eat but their meal is cut short when Ryo leaves after figuring out, based on something Joy had to him, the solution to a problem he had been having with resolving an issue between Zongquan and Zhoushan Xuan.

During Aspiration, the eighth episode, Joy and Wong both help Ryo in his efforts to find martial artists in the area, first directing him to Eileen M. Edelweiss but she doesn't know anything about Wude and instead directs them to another friend of hers, Izumi Takano. When she isn't able to help either they go back to regroup at Hong Kong Tea Shop, until Ryo realises he is late getting back to the temple and takes off. Whilst Wong and Joy are at the tea shop, they overhear one of the customers mention that there is a martial artist named Guixiang at Yan Tin Apartments in the South Carmain Quarter, so they let Ryo know about them.
