Overlooked by the hulk of Ben Ledi, Callander is one of the main gateways to the majestic Trossachs region. This is a tourist hotspot, with gift and sweet shops, a tiny toy museum and an array of tempting eateries – I’m particularly fond of the pies and sweet treats at Mhor Bread. The attractive Main Street is also a key transport artery, becoming unpleasantly congested on sunny weekends. Just below the town centre is the beautiful River Teith, which is treated with caution by nearby residents due to its tendency to flood after heavy rain or snowmelt, but often overlooked by visitors. There are excellent local walks, with my own recommendations listed below.
