On August 6th each year, lanterns are floated down the river surrounding the Hiroshima Peace Park to mark the anniversary of the 1945 Hiroshima Bombing and to pay respects to those who lost their lives.
My animation focuses on the shadows that would be projected by these lanterns - as they pass under glazed sitting areas within a temporary bridge proposal - and emphasises them beyond reality to evoke their intended sobering reference to the real world "nuclear shadows" left behind by the explosion - which capture the final moments of civilians, imprinted onto surfaces through the extreme heat of the blast.
My animation was completed using a mixture of 2D and 3D animation techniques, with a 3D model being used to map shadow paths, which were then manually highlighted frame by frame using charcoal and pencil textures on Photoshop.
The audio has purposely been left silent out of respect.
