Oban - The Distillers Edition

A bit about
A small distillery in the Western Highlands, in the town with the same name, Oban has been in business since 1794. According to their website, they've never expanded and claim to have been using the same distillation process for the last 200+ years, such as fermenting malted barley for 5 days, to achieve the desired flavour.
I honestly appreciate that. They found the best method to make the desired product and they're sticking to it, and I'm sure it's not easy to stay as a small business when selling more and more is usually the goal, regardless of quality.
Time to try it!
The one I've had the pleasure of trying (featured in the pictures above and below) was distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2021.
Matured in Montilla Fino Cask-Wood, it has smooth caramel tones and dried fruit and it's not too overpowering on the nose. With 43% vol, it has a surprisingly soft finish, with just the tiniest bit of smokiness.
Neat it's delicious, no doubt about it, and, for me, adding an ice cube brought out more of the softness and fruitiness (especially orange) with a hint of saltiness.
In Conclusion
Its wonderful colour is mesmerizing but not obtained fully during the ageing process, as caramel colouring has been used to achieve this beautiful hue.
Sill, priced around £80 (November 2022), Oban Distiller's Edition is worth in my humble opinion every penny (or pence) for every dram.
