At 21-years-old, local singer Elaine is taking SA by storm with her debut EP, Elements.
The songstress became the first independent female artist in the country to reach number one on the SA Apple Music Album chart, and also took the title of Top Mzansi Female Album of 2020 on the streaming service.
In August, Apple Music also announced that Elaine was the most streamed local female artist in 2020 to date.
Speaking to Channel24, the singer says all of the achievements have humbled her. "To this day I don't think I've actually processed what that means. I think the day it actually hits me, and I don't know when that's going to be, it's going to be wow! I'm probably going to cry. I haven't had the time to sit down and take in everything that's happened this past year because I've been so focused on maintaining, working and balancing school."
As an independent artist, Elaine says she expected every challenge that was thrown her way on her journey to the top. "I don't want to say that I didn't experience any challenges, but I was prepared for them. So, I knew what was coming my way. I was committed and still am committed to the process."
To her, enduring "the process" is one of the most important ingredients to success. "You cannot avoid it, and you can't make it shorter. You just need to really commit to it," she says, admitting that a major challenge she had was starting over "so many times".
Her resilience allowed her to push through, and from that came Elements - an EP that she describes as "warm, passionate and honest".
Elaine believes it is not only the quality of her music but also how relatable the tracks are, that has kept fans coming back for more. "The quality is amazing, the lyrical content is relatable, it's honest, it's pure and passionate. Good music is good music. You can't beat good music. And I think my music is great, even if I do say so myself," she laughs.
