Born in Derbyshire, England in 1877, Dame Laura Knight showed artistic promise at an early age, becoming the youngest student to enroll in the Nottingham School of Art at 13. There, she developed a passion for painting scenes of modern life in her signature impressionist style. During the first half of the 21st century, Knight became one of the most successful, well-known painters in England. She was created a Dame in 1929, and in 1936 became the first woman to be named a full Academician at the Royal Academy of Art. Professor and cultural historian Lara Feigel wrote of Knight's subject matter, "Knight was so good, in particular, on women working, whether it was her portraits of herself as a painter, the ballet dancers, actors and circus performers she loved observing, or the operatives she painted during the second world war. She took women's work seriously, including her own."

Sonja Henie (1912-1969) was a Norwegian figure skater and film star. A three-time Olympic champion, Henie has won more Olympic and World titles than any other ladies' figure skater. Henie used the celebrity status she gained from her skating career to launch a career in Hollywood, where she starred in numerous box-office hits, becoming one of the industry's highest-paid stars.
