Swamp Sun Orchid


PLANT: To 60cm or more tall when in flower.

LEAVES: Single, long, narrow, deeply channelled and keeled with thick rounded margins. Appears triangular in cross section.

FLOWERS: Up to 6 flowers. 1.5 - 2cm across. Usually dark blue with the dorsal sepal, petals and lateral sepals striped with darker blue or purple. Sometimes white with blue or green stripes, or pink with brown stripes. Column arms lack cilia. Petals often recurved backward. Labellum larger and wider than the tepals.

1.Banded Helmet Orchid, Anzybas carsei Whangamarino - Waikato.Flowers August - November
A critically endangered species. Now only known from one small area in a swamp in the Waikato. Flower a dark red. Dorsal sepal tip is deeply cleft.

Found in scrub and light forests north of Warkworth. Lacks the long thin petals and sepals present on most species of spider orchid. Flower a soft pink red. Local and rare.

Found mainly on the upper branches of tall forest trees, and therefore mostly only seen when the branches or trees fall to the ground.

11.Hidden Spider Orchid, Molloybas cryptanthus Shenstone Block - Te Paki.Flowers July - October A leafless species which lacks chlorophyll. Is found amongst the leaf litter of Beech and Tea Tree forests. The flower is often hidden beneath the leaf litter.
12.Dancing Spider Orchid, Nematoceras acuminatum Dawson Falls - Mt Taranaki.Flowers September - December Found in forests from Northland south to Stewart Island. Dorsal sepal is very long. Leaf triangular with a wavy margin.
13.Spider Orchid,Nematoceras "Pollok" Awhitu Peninsula - Manukau.Flowers August - September A newly recorded species from the Awhitu Peninsula. Centre of labellum dark red, outer areas translucent white.
