  Philodenron Burle-Marxii?
From: Steve at ExoticRainforest.com (ExoticRainforest) on 2008.04.16 at 19:08:28(17411)

I received some cuttings of this plant with the name Philodendron burle-marxii. I know that to be a species name, but I've also seen this plant as Burle Marx Fantasy. Does anyone know if this is the species or a hybrid? Also, how large will it grow?

Joep Moonen told me he is growing this plant but he received his plants from Dewey Fisk and they were not wild collected.

Thanks!

Dear Steve,

Aloha. This is another case of plant name confusion.

I grow this plant and I got mine from Roberto himself.
Unfortunately, I cannot fill in much information
about the origin of this plant. The plant you have
illustrated is, Philodendron 'Burle-Marx Fantasy'. I
do not believe it to be a hybrid, but I am not sure.
It is a slow grower and as it matures it loses the
markings. I have seen it with 8 inch blades, but I
have never seen it blooming. As a vining plant, it is
surprising to me how slow it is...but I do not
fertilize and perhaps my horticultural attention is
faulty.

Dear Steve,

Aloha. I thought that now would be a good time to
sing the praises of my mentor, Roberto Burle-Marx. I
think that many do not realize the depth of his
legacy. I am just going to list plants named in his
honor and then, I will list the named plants that he
discovered...there are many more that are un-named. I
would also like to add that many of these plants have
had their habitats destroyed, so the fact that some of
these are in cultivation perpetuates some of the
species. Some may not be in cultivation...but I do
not know the current status of many of these.

Plants named in tribute to Roberto Burle-Marx:

Aechmea burle-marxii

I was aware Roberto had found a large number of species and that some had been named in his honor. I did not know the list was this long! Excellent information.

By the way, I failed to mention that the photo I posted belonged to Joep Moonen. Leland, did you ever see the plant in Joep's photo in Roberto's collection? The plant is not native to French Guiana but Joep does have it in his personal collection. I'm still trying to learn about this particular plant. Enid tells me it can grow large and most seem to believe it is called Burle Marx Fantasy but has no scientific name.

Steve:

This certainly is not P. burlemarxii which has sort of
strap-shaped leaves. I don't know the latter plant at all since it is
not published.

Thanks Tom. The specimen, whatever it truly is, has been sold frequently as Philodendron Burle Marx Fantasy. It brings a fairly high price on some websites. I have no idea what it might be, but I'd sure like to know where it originated!

Dear Harry,

Aloha. I did not forget Tillandsia burle-marxii...I
did not know about it so I added it to the list.
Thank you for the information...Roberto will be happy
to be remembered.
