Day 255: Persicaria capitata

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A morning’s drive towards the coast, but first a wander through the streets of Rye where I encounter, scrabbling around the cobbles washing up against the walls of one of the quaint, timber-frame houses in the center of town, a persicaria I’d not before met. With that characteristic purple chevron on the foliage (see P. ‘Purple Fantasy’ or maculosa ) and a more ovate leaf than I’d seen, this little scrambler Persicaria capitata has tiny, round flower heads in shades from white to bubble-gum pink, each resembling a little bobbled swimming cap. It’s entirely won me over, and I’m kicking myself for not having employed Nell to snaffle me a cutting.
