Silene pendula

Silene pendula L. (Medit.) – A rare and much decreasing alien, mostly an escape from cultivation. First collected in 1866 in the valley of river Sambre (without further details). Later also recorded in fairly numerous, widely scattered localities but much rarer in the 20th century. Most recently seen in 1981 in Turnhout, in 1988 in Middelkerke and in 2019 in Zwevezele.

Most records are from waste land or near houses. At the end of the 19th century also seen as a weed of arable land (e.g. in Vierset-Barse, Westkapelle), possibly as a seed alien.

Silene pendula is much rarer as an ornamental in Belgium nowadays.
