For François Vincent Raspail (1794–1878), French botanist, politician, physician and naturalist. A republican, with strong political and moral beliefs, he campaigned for social justice, freedom of the press, prison reform, and better working conditions in factories. He was wounded in revolutionary battle, jailed and banished from France for 10 years to Belgium. He was one of the originators of cell theory in biology and an early proponent of the use of the microscope for the study of plants. Among his publications were Essai de Chimie Microscopique (Testing the Chemistry Microscope) (1830), Nouveau Système de Chimie Organique (New System for Organic Chemistry) (1833), and Manuel Annuaire de la Santé (Manual Directory of Health) (1845), which promoted the use of hygiene and antiseptics by the general public.
