Gk. syn- = together; karphos = a dry stalk, scale; possibly referring to the dry bracts that are united into a cone-like structure.
Etymology of speciosissima:
From the Latin speciosus = 'beautiful', 'splendid', 'spectacular' and -issimus the superlative form = 'extremely', 'most'.

Sprawling, white-woolly shrublet 20--60 cm with erect annual stems. Leaves oblong to linear, clasping at the base. Flower heads discoid, large, solitary on elongate peduncles, cream, bracts papery, acuminate, white to cream. July--Jan. Sandstone slopes, SW, LB (Cape Peninsula to Tradouw Pass).
