The native range of this species is Indian Subcontinent to N. & E. Australia. It is a scrambling annual or subshrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is has environmental uses and social uses, as animal food and a medicine and for fuel and food.

Cayman Brac. A native of tropical Asia introduced as a garden plant, this species is obviously a recent escape from cultivation.
