Having sealed their title triumph with a 52-3 home win over Blaina on May 13th, the team carried off the title topping the league with 102 points with one game left to play.

The team, which is home to great rugby internationals including Mark Taylor, Ken Jones and Allan Lewis, was last promoted in 2009 and since then, they have been working hard to reach a second promotion into Division 3.

This wasn’t the only success story for the team this season as they had also reached the semi-finals of the SWALEC Bowl, only to lose by one point – this, following a challenging period of playing six games in 15 days.

The recipe for success, according to backs coach, Gareth Betts, is Wayne Jones, former Pontypool and Wales Under 20’s coach.

Betts said: “Having Wayne on board has really made a difference and he’s brought the team even closer together on and off the pitch – something we didn’t think was possible as we’re already such a close knit community.

“This promotion is fantastic for the club and all the players have worked particularly hard – including Lee Baker, Tom Birch, Jamie Noble and Dan Phillips who have really excelled this season.

“We hope to start next season as we mean to go on, pushing the boundaries and working hard from the get go to challenge another league win to reach Division 2.”

Lee Wright had his debut as team captain this season and said: “It’s great that I’ve been able to lead the team to promotion during my first season as captain.

“I’m lucky to have the opportunity to captain such a determined, talented team of players who really pull together on the pitch. I’m looking forward to next season and hope that we can reach Division 2 this time next year.”
