Noted for his unerring musical instincts and the unmatched richness of his lush voice, Italian bass baritone Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is widely celebrated as one of the most exciting artists performing before today’s public. Making his operatic debut in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni in the early 1990’s, Mr. D’Arcangelo’s great musicality and intelligent use of text to color a score quickly brought him to the attention of Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christopher Hogwood, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, and the late Sir Georg Solti. While particularly noted for his interpretations of Mozart and Rossini, his repertory today is expanding intelligently to encompass opera and symphonic repertory by Bellini, Berlioz, Boito, Donizetti, Gounod, Handel, Monteverdi, Stravinsky,Verdi, and Vivaldi.
Mr. D’Arcangelo regularly performs at La Scala di Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, Bayerische Staatsoper, the Liceu Barcelona, London’s Royal Opera, the Opéra Bastille, as well as the Salzburg and Baden-Baden Festivals. During summer 2011, the bass-baritone from Pescara (Italy) appeared at the Baden-Baden Festival in the title role of Don Giovanni, conducted by Yannick Nézet. Later he went to Salzburg where he performed and televised Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Antonio Pappano conducting.
The start of the 2012-13 season finds Ildebrando D’Arcangelo in Los Angeles for Don Giovanni conducted by James Conlon. Thereafter, he returns to the Chicago Lyric Opera for Don Pasquale conducted by Stephen Lord and directed by Sir Thomas Allen. He returns to the Vienna State Opera as Alidoro in La Cenerentola and later in the title role of Le Nozze di Figaro. Mr. D’Arcangelo makes his Boston Symphony Orchestra debut in Haydn’s Mass in Time of War conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos in early 2013. Spring sees him in Spain at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Il turco in Italia and at the Fundación del Teatro Lírico in Madrid in the Verdi Requiem.
Don Giovanni is central to Mr. D’Arcangelo’s repertory today. In autumn 2010 he premiered two new productions at the Deutsche Opera Berlin and the Vienna State Opera and then in 2011 a new production conducted by Daniel Barenboim at La Scala, followed by a new Zeffirelli production at the Arena di Verona. Moreover, he recorded the title role for Deutsche Grammophon at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden which was released in early fall of 2012 to great critical acclaim.
The Italian bass-baritone continues to be an active recording artist. In addition to the aforementioned Don Giovanni, Deutsche Grammophon has released a solo album, “Mozartissimo”, dedicated to the composer with whom the Artist is most identified. EMI recently released a highly acclaimed Rossini’s “Stabat Mater”conducted by Antonio Pappano. Additionally, Mr. D'Arcangelo’s discography includes Haydn's L'Anima del filosofo (Hogwood), La Bohème (Chailly), Verdi's “Requiem” (Gergiev), and La Sonnambula on Decca; Le Nozze di Figaro (Harnoncourt) on DG; Rossini’s Otello and Bianca e Falliero on Opera Rara; Semiramide on Nightingale Classics and Verdi`s Il Trovatore (Pappano) and Vivaldi’s Bajazet (Biondi) on EMI.
A DVD of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena with Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanča from the Vienna State Opera has been released by Deutsche Grammophon in autumn 2011. Other DVDs include Bizet’s Carmen (Pappano) Rossini’s Tancredi; two productions of Don Giovanni (Muti; Harding); Le nozze di Figaro (Harnoncourt); I Puritani; L’Elisir d’amore opposite Ms. Netrebko and Rolando Villazón from the Vienna State Opera.
