1 African Bulbs Formerly The Croft Wild Bulb Nursery Cameron & Rhoda McMaster (PERMIT NO 10855) Welcome to the world of South African wild bulbs. Our nursery has moved from Stutterheim, near the Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape, to Napier a village between Caledon and Bredasdorp in the Western Cape. Most of our stock is still from the summer rainfall regions, but we will gradually add more from the local winter rainfall region. The summer-rainfall bulbs are posted in May/June. The winter-growing bulbs are listed separately, and are posted in January. Hopefully they will then start new growth immediately (after a short dormancy) and be in the right season. Bulbs are sold in various sizes as listed. Prices are in US dollars, excluding postage. The Amaryllid seeds marked ** are in $3.20, with 6 15 seeds depending on scarcity. All other seeds are in $2.20 each, mostly with seeds. Occasionally we can offer wholesale quantities of seeds and bulbs when available. The seed list is on page eight. If you re looking for something not listed, please ask - we have some species in very small quantities, too few to list. If you prefer, ask for a quote before ordering, in case an item is out of stock (or list some alternatives). The USA requires phyto. certificates which adds $25.00 to the costs. Postage costs are on the order form on page seven. Unfortunately we don t offer a credit card option. Kindly add US $9.50 for bank commission on cheques. Cash payment in major currencies is also acceptable. GENERAL CULTIVATION SUGGESTIONS The main soil requirement is excellent drainage. Mix loam, compost, coarse sand and composted pine bark in equal quantities. 20 ml general bulb fertilizer can be added to a 10-litre bucket of mix. For winter-growing bulbs, add an equal portion of really coarse sand, and leave out the fertiliser. Make sure the drainage holes at the base of the container are large, and place some large pieces of bark or stones (or broken styrofoam packaging to reduce weight) at the bottom of the container, then fill with the mix. We pour boiling water into the pots to kill off most of the weed seeds. Every grower has a different recipe! A lot depends on whatever is available to put in the mix, and on costs, but do ensure it is a loose coarse mix. One successful grower used broken peach pips (without the kernel) to improve texture for winter growing bulbs. For deciduous bulbs, water the container once after planting, and then not again until a leaf has appeared. Evergreen species need to be kept just slightly moist until established. Sow seeds in a similar mix with a cupful of palm peat mixed into the top 4 cm, in a box approximately 25 x 35 cm, 12 cm deep. This is a useful size that does not dry out as fast as the smaller containers. Sow seeds in rows and 2-5 mm deep, and put very different species together, to avoid confusion when lifting, such as one row Eucomis, one row Tritonia, one row Arums. 4 Descriptive notes on the genera listed Genus Flowering time Descriptive Notes Agapanthus: Summer Evergreen, hardy, easily grown in a permanent position. Good on embankments. Long strap leaves, round head of blue flowers on tall stem, A. praecox tallest, cm. Tulbaghia Summer "Wild Garlic", 6-8 bell flowers top the stem 25-30cm, green/ brown/ orange or mauve, scented (esp. simmleri) in late afternoon/ evening. Zantedeschia: Summer "Arum Lily" (also Calla lily). Large arrow shaped dark green leaves. Flowers pink (rehmannii), yellow (elliottiana), cream-white (albomaculata). Sun/semi-shade. Hardy, easy to grow. All are deciduous except for Z. aethiopica, which has white or white & green flowers (variety Green Goddess) and prefers some shade. Bulbine: All Year Evergreen, hardy, drought resistant, easy to grow; tufts of fleshy leaves, stalk with many small bright yellow fluffy flowers; leaf juice effective soothing first-aid for cuts, stings, rashes etc cm. Kniphofia: Summer "Red Hot Poker", usually evergreen, easy to grow, hardy. Many long tough leaves, tall stem, large oval ball of red/yellow flowers. Gloriosa: Summer "Flame Lily", climber, unusual red/yellow flowers. Deciduous. Shade. Sandersonia Summer Christmas bells, climber needs to be tied up, bright orange lantern flowers, Deciduous, shade. Good cut flower. Albuca: Spring/ Hardy, drought resistant, variable leaves. Spike/raceme of flowers, Summer yellow/ white with green stripe, light scent. Size varies, from dainty A. shawii (yellow), to large A. nelsonii (white) 100+ cm. Bowiea: Summer Scrambling feathery climber, small green flowers, Deciduous. Shade. Drimiopsis: Summer Good pot-plant, spotted leaves, spikes of small white flowers. Shade Eucomis: Summer "Pineapple Flower", leaflets top the persistent cream/green flowers on stout stem, 20 cm (E. v.d.merwei) -120 cm (E. pole-evansii). Hardy, easy to grow, pest resistant, showy pot or garden plant. Very long lasting cut flower. E. montana and E. vandermerwei have some maroon colouring or spotting. Lachenalia: Winter/ L. bulbifera from W. Cape, red flowers,early winter. L. campanulata Spring from E. Cape, pinkish flowers in late spring (2-3 spikes). L pusilla has a little posy of whitish flowers surrounded by a rosette of leaves. These are easy to grow, and make good pot plants in a sunny spot. Ledebouria: Summer "Little Squill". Usually spotted leaves, green/purple flowers, up to 20cm, sun. a variety of species. All are best as potplants. Massonia: Winter They bear a posy of whitish flowers between the two leaves flat on the ground, which are sometimes textured. M. jasminiflora is strongly scented. Sun to semishade. Ornithogalum: Late Spring "Chinkerichee". Hardy. White - O. conicum& thyrsoides about 40cm, O. saundersiae up to 1.5 m. O. dubium, yellow, 25 cm. Very good cut flower. Polyxena Winter Similar to Massonia. Scilla: Spring "Blue Squill" (S. natalensis) large exposed bulb clumps, large rosette of leaves. Flowering stem up to 120cm. S. nervosa is smaller, white. Scilla bauerii is still smaller, a miniature S. natalensis.

5 Hypoxis: Spring/ "African Potato", made famous by herbalists, showy and hardy. Summer Yellow star flowers, spring /summer; dormant in winter. Sunny spot. Amaryllis: Autumn "Belladonna" strongly scented large pink flowers, sturdy 40 cm stem Strap leaves after flowers, growing from autumn to late spring. Ammocharis: Summer Large ball of strongly scented pink trumpet flowers, short stem. Long leaves, deciduous, sun. Boophone: Late Spring "Tumble Weed". Ball of pinkish flowers appear before leaves, which are wavy -edged in fanlike arrangement. Deciduous, sun. Brunsvigia: Late Summer Also "Tumbleweed", with attractive pink flowers on long pedicels. Large leaves, deciduous, sun. Clivia: Spring "Bush Lily". Showy ball of large orange flowers, then green berries that turn red. Full shade. Dark evergreen strap leaves. C. miniata has flared flowers, and C. nobilis has tubular reddish flowers. Some seeds of yellow C. miniata may be available in August Crinum: Summer "River Lily" (C. bulbispermum); "Water Lily" (C. campanulatum.), 80 cm. Can take flooding in the growing season, but C. macowanii, C. lugardiae & C. variabile (winter growing) come from drier areas. Scented pink trumpet flowers. Sun, except C. moorei likes shade. Cybistetes: Autumn The winter growing equivalent of Ammocharis. Cyrtanthus: Spring/ "Ifafa Lily" (C. mackenii & C. sp) long tubular yellow/ cream/pink Summer flowers; C. brachyscyphus has shorter red tube; C. helictus & C. smithiae (larger) have corkscrew leaves and bell flowers, cream with buff/pink stripes; C. breviflorus is yellow, C. obliquus has large pendulous green & orange flowers; C. suaveolens has dark red scented tubular flws; C. elatus has red or pink large bell flws; C. falcatus has a hairpin-bend at the top of stem with pendulous dull orange flowers, C tuckii has tubular dark orange flowers. Haemanthus: Spring/ Summer "Paint Brush Flower" - flowers have long brushlike stamens close together: H. albiflos is white/yellow, short stem, wide leaf, excellent for shady spots, as also C. pauculifolius; C. montanus is off-white, 15 cm stem, the leaves are strap-like. H. carneus has pink flowers, H. coccineus has red flowers and H. humilis has light to dark pink flowers. H. humilis (giant) has exceptionally large leaves. Decorative red or yellow berries contain the seeds. Nerine: Late Summer/ Pink/red flowers mostly in a ball: N. filifolia, N. filamentosa &. Early Winter N. masoniorum (smallest) have thin grasslike leaves; N.bowdenii has large flowers & multiplies rapidly. N. laticoma has largest flowers. N. sarniensis has red flowers cm. Easy to grow. Scadoxus: Srping/ S. puniceus: Red "paintbrush", semi-shade, 40 cm stem appears Autumn in late spring; S. katharinae has a ball of red flowers, likes full shade; red berries, decorative leaves. Previously = Haemanthus. Babiana Spring B. patersoniae 20cm tall has pale blue flowers. B. sp. (montana?) has mauve flowers with yellow markings, under 10cms tall. Chasmanthe Spring About 80 cm tall with dark orange flowers along the stem. Seeds of the yellow flowering variety available, but no guarantee that the seed plants will have yellow flowers! Crocosmia: Autumn Orange to red flowers. Very showy and easy to grow, multiplies well, clump forming cm. The summer growing equivalent of Chasmanthe.

6 Dierama: Spring/ "Hairbells", "Fairy Wands". Tall wiry stems, hanging bell flowers Summer light to dark pink. Grows well near water. Hardy, clump forming. Dietes: Spring/ "Wild Iris". White flowers on tall stems, throughout spring and Summer summer, in spurts. Clump forming, hardy and easy to grow. Freesia: Winter or F. laxa & grandiflora grow easily in shady spots, F. laxa has red or Early summer white flowers on a slender stem up to 30 cm. A blue variety flowers in late winter. F. grandiflora is larger, with scarlet flowers in winter, stem up to 45 cm. F. caryophyllacea flowers in early wint er and has strongly scented cream/yellow flowers, about 6 cm tall. Gladiolus: Winter to A variety of shapes, sizes & colours, often scented. Late Summer Hesperantha: Spring/ Summer Several flowers up the stem, about 30 cm. Mostly pink. (See Schizostylis) Moraea: Spring/ Fairly large Iris flowers, shades of yellow, up to 80 cm. Sun. Early Summer spring to early summer, but M. reticulata flowers in autumn, and M. setifolia (=Gynandriris) & M. fergusoniae (with curly leaves) are bluish and spring flowering. Tritonia: Summer Flowers on a cm stem. T. disticha bright deep pink, T. lineata is dull yellow, and T. laxifolia is orange. Easy to grow in a sunny spot. Tritoniopsis Early summer ( = Anapalina ) Orange-red flowers about 50cm tall, summer. Almost like a watsonia. Schizostylis: Late Summer Red/cerise star flowers, along a 40-50cm stem. sunny damp places. Multiplies well (now Hesperantha coccinea) Watsonia: Spring/ W. pillansii showy spikes of flowers, up to 100 cm, shades of orange Summer W. amatolae is shorter, strong mauvy -pink, summer flowering and evergreen. 8 SEED LIST: The fleshy Amaryllid seeds should be planted immediately as they germinate spontaneously. They are only available for a short time - the month is indicated on the list. The summer growing species should be sown in spring or early summer. Those marked W are winter growing - sow these in autumn. Agapanthus and Scilla should be sown immediately upon receipt (midsummer to early autumn). Store seeds in the refrigerator until they can be sown.
