Encephalartos lanatus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Threatened.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Does well with regular watering.
  • Frost tolerant.

PROPAGATION:

  • Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Mpumalanga Province on rocky ledges and open grassveld in the Bronkhorstspruit, Witbank and Middelburg districts.

STEM:

  • Aerial, erect but long stems sometimes recline.
  • Stems can attain a length of 3 meters with a diameter of 25 cm – 40 cm.
  • The stem apex has lightly packed woolly whitish cataphylls.

LEAVES:

  • Bluish green on the upper side and lighter green on the lower side.
  • Young leaves have a white woolly layer that dissappears when leaves mature.
  • Leaves are stiff with apices that curve characteristically down- and inwards.
  • Leaflets shield one another.
CONES:
  • Cones of both genders have a dense greyish woolly outer layer.
