SUMMARY
Stromata developing within the inner bark tissues of narrow twigs, 1.5–4 (–6) × 1–1.5 (–2) mm, erumpent through longitudinal splits in the bark surface and surrounded laterally by disrupted periderm tissue. Stromatal tissues pseudoparenchymatous, grey-brown in colour and delimited by a darker marginal zone, the surface dark brown. Ascomata perithecial, 20–40 in each stroma, 400–500 µm diam, ± spherical but sometimes distorted by pressure from surrounding tissues, each with a short vertical (non-convergent) neck and a conspicuous black periphysate, shortly erumpent ostiole. Ascomatal walls composed of similar pseudoparenchymatic tissue to the stroma, but with slightly thicker-walled and darker cells. Interascal tissue absent. Asci 45–75 × 10–13 µm, narrowly pyriform with the upper part sometimes extended into a ± cylindrical section, rather thick-walled but not fissitunicate, with a large cylindrical J- refractive apical ring, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, 12–16 (–18) × (4–) 6–7.5 µm, obovoid to obpyriform, the apex obtuse and the base rounded, 1-septate with the septum towards the base, the upper cell ± ellipsoidal to fusiform and the lower cell broadly cylindrical; fairly thin-walled, hyaline and smooth, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
