SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: stromata irregularly shaped, usually containing 4-7 ascomata but sometimes only one, the ascomatal necks pushing through cracks in the outer periderm. Stromatic tissue reddish brown, composed almost entirely of degenerate bark cells, with an ill-defined darker outer layer. Ascomata 250-400 µm diam, sometimes irregularly shaped due to mutual compression, with rather irregular ± cylindrical necks to 400 µm in height and 200 230m diam., black, thick-walled. Peridium 30-40 µm thick, composed of many outer layers of strongly melanized angular cells 7-10 µm diam., gradually merging into inner layers which are almost hyaline. Subhymenial layer difficult to distinguish from the inner layers of the ascomatal wall. Neck composed of a thin outer layer of melanized cells, and a wide region of rather thick-walled hyphal tissue with cells 3-4 µm diam. Periphyses not observed. lnterascal tissue of copious pseudoparaphyses 1.5-2 µm diam, fairly thin-walled, anastomosing, septate, immersed within a well-developed gelatinous matrix. Asci formed from a crozier system, 148-176 x 8.5-10 µm, cylindrical, the stalk to 35 µm in length, gradually tapering, the apex rounded; very thick-walled when immature, becoming much less so at maturity, with a well-developed apical ring structure ca 4 µm diam and 3 µm in depth which does not blue in iodine, surrounding a narrow channel which opens out briefly above the apical structure in unopened asci; 8-spored. Ascospores 17-20(-24) x 7.5-8.5 µm, cylindric-ellipsoidal, a few rather irregular in shape, with a thick median septum, dark brown, thick-walled, rugose-striate, with 15-20 ridges; without a mucous sheath or appendages.
