SUMMARY
Thallus to 2 cm diam., aggregated or more rarely with dispersed areoles. Areoles flattened, subsquamulose and often with crenulate margins, yellow-green to green-grey, green-brown or green-black, often not clearly delimited. Soredia abundant, 1-2 mm diam. arising from soralia on the surface of the areoles, usually discrete and circular but sometimes becoming confluent to form a continuous crust, pale yellow. Prothallus usually inconspicuous.
Anamorph: no information available.
Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, rarely present, to 0.5 mm diam., arising on single areoles, sessile and somewhat constricted below. Thalline exciple well-developed, entire to crenulate, becoming excluded with age, green- to pink-brown. Discs finally slightly convex, yellow, pink-brown, green-black, or brown-black. Epithecium brown, crystalline inclusions absent. Hypothecium hyaline. Interascal tissue of paraphyses, simple, sparsely branched or anastomosed, septate, apices slightly swollen. Asci cylindric-clavate, the apex strongly thickened with a K/I+ blue apical dome and a broad K/I– apical cushion, outermost gelatinous coat K/I+ blue, 8-spored. Ascospores 7-13 × 4-7 μm, ellipsoidal, hyaline, aseptate, thin- and smooth-walled, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Chemistry: Thallus C–, K–, KC+ yellow, Pd–, UV+ dull orange (usnic acid, zeorin).
