Family: Unknown familyGenus: Mellitiosporium
SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: stromata absent. Ascomata apothecia, erumpent through the substratum and splitting open to reveal the hymenium; (450-) 600-850 x 250-450 µm when fully mature, discoid and widely elliptical, the long axis usually parallel to the wood grain, black and leathery in appearance with an irregular raised margin. Hymenium exposed permanently once the ascoma is mature. Lower wall absent, the hymenium developing from a thin layer of subhymenial tissue formed directly upon tanned wood cells. Upper (outer) wall to 40 µm thick, strongly melanized with the cells completely occluded. Lip cells apparently absent. Interascal tissue of rather thick-walled gelatinized unbranched paraphyses 38-45 µm in length and ca 1.5 µm diam., enlarged and sometimes branching at the apex and with a brown epithecial layer. Asci 34-39 x 6-9 µm, cylindrical to cylindric-clavate, short-stalked, the apex rounded, rather thick-walled but not fissitunicate, thickened at the apex but without clearly visible apical structures, not blueing in iodine, 1-spored. Ascospores (21-) 26-29 x 7-8.5 µm, cylindrical to cylindric-fusiform, the ends rounded, pale to mid brown, with 7-11 transverse septa and most cells eventually divided longitudinally, the individual cells often bulging, gelatinous sheath not seen.
