Family: NitschkiaceaeGenus: Rhagadostoma
SUMMARY
Vegetative mycelium not conspicuous, a few hyphae visible at the base of the ascoma.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, (220-) 300-400 µm diam., superficial, singly or in small clusters on the degraded host thallus, ± globose, not papillate, black, the surface verrucose. Peridium 80-100 µm thick, composed of an outer layer of very thick-walled strongly melanized globose cells (3-) 5-10 µm diam., and an inner layer of thin-walled ± hyaline elongate cells. Interascal tissue absent or of short sparse chains of very thin-walled inflated cells, the ostiole lined with elongate periphyses. Asci 42-52 (-82) x 22-27 µm, cylindric-clavate, sessile, thin-walled and not fissitunicate with the wall slightly thickened at the apex, not staining in iodine, 8-spored. Ascospores biseriately arranged, 16.6-18.6 (-21.9) x 8.3-9.5 µm, ovoid to broadly ellipsoidal, clearly constricted at the median to slightly submedian septum with the upper cell broader, hyaline, thin- and smooth-walled, with a broad gelatinous sheath.
Description adapted in part from Navarro-Rosinés & Hladun (1994).
