D.J. Caruso is Directing an Adaptation of a Gold Rush Era-Set Romance Novel Titled REDEEMING LOVE

D.J. Caruso, the director behind Disturbia, Eagle Eye, I Am Number Four, and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is doing something very different from the films he normally makes. He is directing a film adaptation of a romance novel titled Redeeming Love.

Caruso is actually already in post-production on the project and it stars Abigail Cowen, Tom Lewis, Logan Marshall-Green, Famke Janssen, Nina Dobrev and Eric Dane.

The story is set in California and Boston during the Gold Rush Era of the 1850s. It’s explained that the book is “a more contemporary retelling of the biblical book of Hosea. The story centers on Angel (Cowen), who was sold into prostitution as a child. She has survived through hatred and self-loathing, until she meets Michael Hosea (Lewis) and discovers there is no brokenness that love can’t heal.”

The book was written by Francine Rivers and was published in 1991. While this film project is a departure from the kind of films the director usually makes, Caruso explained that he fell in love with the characters and the story when his wife introduced him to the novel. He said in a statement:

“While many are victims of horrible circumstances that will haunt them forever, some characters are able to overcome the pain, the sorrow and the brutality to discover how remarkable they truly are. Angel’s journey reminds us that healing happens through love and acceptance, never through judgment or force.”

Well, it certainly has a good message that I can’t and won’t argue with. It’s good for directors to switch things up and try new things! I hope this ends up being a good project for Caruso. After this, he’ll go and make xXx 4, which he’s currently attached to direct.
