Summary
Magnolia species are shrubs or trees. Leaves simple, alternate, entire, buds enclosed in large convolute stipules which are connate in pairs, where stipules are free or adnate from petiole. Flowers bisexual, terminal, solitary, Sepals 3-5, Petals 6-21 in 3 series. Stamens numerous, filaments flat with no or little interval between them and carpels, Gynoecium sessile, Carpels many persistant 2 ovuled with stigmas running along their ventral side, rarely more, fruiting carpels few, crowded dehiscing along dorsal or ventral suture, sometimes woody and circumcissile. Fruit with an elongated axis, seeds pendulous with a long cottony cord, 1 or more in each carpel.

          Tree
          A fast growing deciduous tree about 25-30 m tall, and about 2 m girth. Bark grayish, slightly corky, brown inside and turns into dark brown when exposed, fibrous about 2.5 cm thick. Young parts including bracts and stipules densely pale grayish tomentose, stipular scars are prominent on the branchlets. Leaves simple, alternate, lanceolate-elliptic, elliptic-oblong, 16-26 × 4-7 cm across, base cuneate or acute, sometimes obtuse, margin entire, apex acute or shallow mucronate at the tip, thinly coriaceous, glabrous somewhat shining above, paler pubescent or matted grey-tomentose beneath, leaves turn yellow before falling, lateral veins 12-24 on either side of the midrib, almost parallel, impressed above, more prominent on midrib beneath, reticulate veinlets fine and close but distinct on on the upper surface of the leaf, petiole stout, about 1-1.5 cm long, stipules oblong, stipular scars 3-5 mm long. Flowers bisexual, solitary, axillary appearing with the leaves, white or pale white, about 5-7 cm across, pedicels stout, about 2 cm long, buds about 3 cm long, bracts densely silky grey. Perianth parts about 12-18, oblanceolate-elliptic, apex truncate, fleshly, about 3-5 x 0.7-1 cm across, petals gradually smaller towards inside. Stamens 30-70, glabrous, uniseriate, caducous, much shorter than the gynoecium, filaments short, glabrous, anthers, oblong about 8 mm long, Gynoecium conical or ellipsoid, with stalk of about 1 cm long, densely velutinous, carpels 45-60 plus, ovoid, wooly about 3-4 x 1.7-2 mm across, style slender, Fruiting receptacle 3-5 x 2 cm across, carpels, compressed, rounded near the base, with beaks near at the apex, about 1.5-2.2. x 1-1.5 cm across, dark brown with tuberculate lenticels, seeds 1-3, obovoid, angular, dark yellowish orange with brown hard test.
