North Iowa NHS inducts 11 new members
The North Iowa chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony on Thursday, Mar. 13, to welcome 11 new members into the chapter. NIB rolls out the red carpet North Iowa Betterment gave more than 100 guests the red carpet treatment at its annual Winter Gala on Saturday, Mar. 8 at the Heritage Town Center. The night started out with photos on the “red carpet” as guests arrived at the Heritage Town Center. There was a cocktail hour, followed by a speech by NIB president Matt Duve
and a catered roast beef dinner and dessert. Entertainment for the night included Rebecca Davis playing the harp during dinner and music by All BS Band. There were live and silent auctions, along with a photo booth and slide show. There was also a “heads or tails” game, in which guests put their hands on their head
or their “tail” to guess the outcome of a flipped coin. The winner of the game was Levi Judge, who took home a Roomba donated by NGT. The Gala serves as NIB’s biggest fundraiser of the year and was organized by committee members: Jamie Price, Tressa Larson, Monica Main, Lisa Berggren, Alicea Porter, Erin Homsey and Missy Duve. continued on page 12

New police cruiser arrives
Buffalo Center Police Chief Matt Homlquist has been breaking in the police department’s new 2014 Ford Taurus police interceptor, which arrived at the beginning of March. The vehicle replaces the department’s old Chevy Trailblazer, which is now up for sale by the City.

Pancake Breakfast at Thompson Fire Hall The Thompson Fire Department will host its annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 23 at the Thompson Fire Hall from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs and sausage links will be served for free will donation.
Annual Pork Loin Supper this Friday United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center will host its annual pork loin supper on Friday, March 21 from 5-7 p.m. There is a $7 fee for adults and $5 for children 5-12 years of age. Children under 5 eat free.
“Shrek” this Friday and Saturday at North Iowa North Iowa High School will present “Shrek the Musical” this Friday and Saturday, Mar. 21-22, with shows beginning at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets cost $6 and are available at the school business office. The National Honor Society will also hold an ice cream social following Friday’s performance. Freewill donations will be accepted.
North Iowa is officially on board with forming a new super conference between the North Iowa Conference and the Corn Bowl Conference. The North Iowa School Board approved the plan to form a new two-division super conference beginning with the 2015-16 school year at its monthly meeting on Monday, Mar. 10. All of the boards of the involved schools will discuss the issue this month, and athletic directors from the districts have already begun planning schedules. The proposed super conference would include Belmond-Klemme, Bishop Garrigan, Central Spring, Eagle Grove, Forest City, GarnerHayfield/Ventura, Lake Mills, Nashua-Plainfield, Newman Catholic, North Butler, Northwood-Kensett, North Union, Osage, Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock, St. Ansgar, West Fork and West Hancock. North Iowa Supt. Cory Myer hopes the super conference would provide new opportunities for students beyond athletics, with possibilities including new art competitions, quiz bowls and honor bands and choirs. The board also held a public hearing last Monday on its 2014-15 bud-
get. The budget includes a reduced property tax rate of 9.81062 per $1,000 taxable valuation, which is about 25 cents lower than last year’s final rate of 10.06498 per $1,000. There were no objections, and the board approved the budget. In other business, the Board heard a report from Hunter Gelhaus and Rick Meyer of the Bison FFA on the FFA chapter’s 2013 crop production. Yields on land leased by the school totaled 762.33 bushels of soybeans on 16.5 acres and 3,115.81 bushels of corn on 19.5 acres. The FFA also planted soybeans on 11.4 acres owned by the school, which yielded 301 bushels. The chapter sold its soybeans for $12.31 per bushel and its corn for $4.19 per bushel. With the aid of seed and labor donations, the FFA’s crop sale profits totaled $5,216 for the year. The Board accepted resignations from John Hagedorn as bus driver, Chad Hinders as high school baseball coach and Steve Bergeson as middle school wrestling coach. Hinders was offered the head softball coaching position, while Rebecca Schwartz was named assistant softball coach and Shelby Hanna was appointed middle school volleyball
coach. Graig Eichenberger will be the new head high school baseball coach. A contract change was also made for custodian Bev Brooker, who went up from 18 hours per week to 24 hours per week to accommodate custodial work in the new wellness center. The Board approved a cell phone stipend of $90 per month for Board Secretary Sara Meinders. Supt. Myer said the phone will be useful for things such as updating the school’s new Facebook page, as websites like Facebook and Twitter are blocked on the school’s network. The school’s Facebook page is located at www.facebook.com/northiowacommunityschool. The Board renewed the district’s athletic sharing agreements with Forest City for wrestling and with Lake Mills for bowling for the 201415 school year. Supt. Myer said the response to the new wellness center has been wonderful, with 266 people signed up so far as members. Myer said that number is about double what he expected, and the school has had to order more ID cards because they already ran out of cards for new members. continued on page 12
City freezes water bills due to freezing pipes
Buffalo Center residents won’t see a hike in their water bills if they’ve been running extra water to prevent pipes from freezing. The Buffalo Center City Council voted last Wednesday to keep water bills steady for residents in the coming months, as the City will charge customers the same amount per month during the second quarter of the year
as they were charged during the first quarter. The decision comes as the City encourages residents to continue monitoring their water temperatures, even as the weather begins to warm up. The City advises water customers to run a small, steady stream of water if the temperature drops to 40 degrees or below. A pencil-sized
stream is recommended if the temperature falls to 38 degrees, and a larger stream is advised if water temperatures drop lower. Mayor Armstrong said the issue of freezing pipes could continue until May. In other business, the Council hired summer help for the park continued on page 12

Capitol Highlights By Representative Tedd Gassman Iowa House District 7 tedd.gassman@legis.iowa.gov A number of people have contacted me about medical marijuana as of lately. It would be difficult for me to vote for the use of medical marijuana in the smoking form. I believe it is a gateway drug to other harsher forms of drugs. We have spent a great deal of money trying to help people stop smoking tobacco and to prevent people from smoking tobacco. Why would we legalize smoking marijuana? If there are various substances in the marijuana plant that could be medicinal when extracted and used in the form of a pill or whatever, that would need to be looked at. Other states that have loosened laws allowing marijuana for medical or recreational purposes have encountered “unintended consequences” in the aftermath. The opium plant is used to extract morphine. I am grateful for morphine, as I have had five knee operations. This Friday, March 14, is the last day that legislation passed by our chamber must be passed by the appropriate committee in the other chamber. If that does not occur, it would no longer be eligible for de-

bate in either chamber. The only exceptions to this rule are those bills that have a fiscal impact on the state budget. Some of the bills passed in either chamber could be changed in the other chamber or the bill could be different to begin with and would have to go through a conference committee. I realize that by the time you read this, it will have already happened. Although most or all of the schools in district 7 are currently testing for radon or have tested for radon, I did vote for a bill that would require the department of education to inform school districts about the risks associated with radon. Each school district would have to notify the department by December 1 whether it has a radon testing and mitigation plan. If schools do not have a plan for radon testing and mitigation, they would have to notify the department of any plans to implement a radon testing and mitigation plan. That plan would be forwarded on to the legislature in January of 2015. This law is designed to encourage our school districts to move forward on the radon issue. It is believed that there is a radon problem that is not being looked into at this time. The data that we get will help the legislature understand the scope of the situation without putting an out-and-out mandate on school districts. dennis.guth@legis.iowa.gov This week the Senate considered a bill that would make texting while on the roadway and even while stopped at a stoplight, a moving violation. This means that being caught texting is cause enough to be stopped by law enforcement, and this would go on your record the same as a speeding ticket. Texting is indeed a dangerous thing to do while operating a car. However, I thought Senator Brad Zaun offered an interesting amendment. His amendment simply said drivers must use common sense while operating a vehicle. He explained that there are many other things that are dangerous to do while operating a vehicle. Here are few he listed: eating, reading, disciplining your children, adjusting your radio or climate control, putting on makeup or being distracted by a pet. His point is we seem to think that government must regulate everything. What we really need is for people to use common sense and be accountable for their own actions. I agree. Predictably, his amendment was struck down and the original bill passed the Senate with bi-partisan support. However, the issue appears to have died in the Iowa House. At the beginning of the session, Governor Branstad committed to getting something passed to address bullying in schools. House Republicans and Senate Democrats have two very different bills. The Democrat version insists only behavior against certain classes of students be treated as bullying. This would mean that if you are a minority or homosexual, you would be protected under this law. If you are just the new kid in
town or you hang out with the geeks, this law would not apply. I think it is time to quit creating segments of society that receive special rights and start treating everyone the same. This appears to be an issue that will cause much heated debate the rest of the session. I suggest that we apply the Golden Rule and “treat others as you would like to be treated.” This looks like another area where government is trying to micro-manage, and we might be better off allowing the local school boards to make their own policy. March 21 was the last funnel date for legislation to reach the floor in order to be passed this year. There are several good bills that came over from the House that will not be debated in the Senate because the Majority Leader refused to put them on the agenda. That includes a bill to ban webcam abortions, protect traditional marriage and several gun rights bills. If we want any of these issues to be discussed, we must change the leadership in the Senate. I urge citizens to contact me if they have questions about what is going on in our state government. The Ladies Literary Circle has made this an important community project. 60 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, March 18, 1954 Saturday, March 20, promises to be a gala day for members of the Buffalo Center Co-op Oil Company. They will distribute over 600 dividend checks for 1952 totaling over $14,000 at the station. Directors of the company will be present all day to meet their patrons and aid Manager Lyle Wilson in the distribution of the bonus checks. The sum of over $7,000 has been contributed for the March of Dimes fund in Winnebago County. Buffalo Center gave over $700.00 Betty Burma is one of the students participating in Luther College’s student teaching program in elementary education, March 1- March 19. She is teaching Kindergarten in the Decorah Public Schools.

Waldorf names Quisling cheerleading coach Waldorf College has hired Dyanna Quisling as its cheerleading program’s head coach. “Dyanna has been a great addition to our staff,” said Bart Gray, Waldorf director of athletics. “Her experience in cheerleading at the secondary level will provide her with an excellent foundation on which to build our program here at Waldorf.” Quisling, a native of Buffalo Center, graduated from North Iowa High School in 1991, where she was active in cheerleading. “I have loved cheerleading since I wore my first uniform in junior high,” Quisling said. “Waldorf has a great program and a reputation for having the best all-girls squads in the state. The opportunity to coach an all-girls squad with a history of excellence is exciting.” Quisling served as North Iowa’s cheer coach for the past five years, leading the team to three years of state competition. She guided the Bison to third place in 2010, runnerup honors in 2011 and seventh place in 2013. Quisling is certified by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches & Administrators (AACCA) and is a member of the Iowa Cheer Coaches Association Representative Council. Quisling, who will also serve as Waldorf’s athletic office assistant,
assumed her position on Feb. 3. “Her other duties as reception/office assistant will help alleviate the workload stress on others in the department,” Gray said. Quisling takes the helm of the cheerleading program at an exciting time. In April, the National Association of Intercollege Athletics (NAIA) will transition cheerleading and dance to a nationally-sponsored varsity sport, culminating in a national championship. “With cheerleading in the NAIA being elevated to a national championship sport, it brings new importance to this position,” Gray said. Quisling has three children – Kassi, Gabe and Izacc.

Cooper nominated as Local Hero in national contest The community can help a “Local Hero” get a new ride this spring, during National Mobility Awareness Month. Dalton Cooper of Buffalo Center has been nominated as a Local Hero in a contest for a new wheelchair-accessible van, which is sponsored by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. Dalton, the son of Duane and Teresa Cooper, was born three weeks early with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy and weighed just four pounds. He spent four weeks in a neonatal intensive care unit before he was able to come home. When he was nine months old, Dalton began having seizures, which led to the discovery that he had suffered brain damage. Now 16 years old, he has had about 20 surgeries in his short life; some of which have kept him in the hospital for weeks. “At 16, he is completely dependent on family, but that doesn’t stop him from living,” said his mom, Teresa. “He has never let any of the surgeries get him down. He was part of the football team in elementary and also sang in the elementary choir. He is able to go to a work program for work this summer that is about 30 miles away. Having a good vehicle that he can get around in is so impor-
tant. “His current van has a lot of issues and things that are broke on it,” said Teresa. “We as a family can’t afford to fix some of the problems or afford a new van at this time. Dalton loves to be out and about. He never wants to just sit home. We go to all the local football games, his first love. He goes to as many sport events to cheer on his siblings and cousins as he can. Everyone that meets him walks away with a smile and a better feel for life. Voting continues through May 9. “I thought having a child that would never walk would destroy me,” said Teresa. “Dalton has made me and so many people understand that he is perfect – the most perfect you will ever get. He makes me smile and so happy. His faith, understanding and acceptance of who he is make those around him love him even more. “He would be so happy to win a van; it would be the best thing ever,” his mom added. “We would have to listen to him brag the rest of the year.”

Ruth Sheldahl, age 94 of Lakota, Ruth Sheldahl passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014 at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service was held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota, with Pastor Lynn Noel officiating. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Lakota. Ruth Mildred Hertzke Sheldahl was born on February 17, 1920 to Paul F. Hertzke and Mattie Leigh Hertzke in Lincoln Township 1944-2014 outside Lakota. She was baptized Services: on April 25, 1920 at St. Paul Funeral service was held 10:30 Lutheran Church in Lakota. Ruth was confirmed in the same Lutheran a.m. Friday, March 14 at St. Paul Church on May 28, 1933. She Lutheran Church in Lakota. attended country school in Lincoln Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Township and completed high Cemetery, Lakota. school, graduating May 18, 1937 from Lakota High School. On September 8, 1938, Ruth and Edward Sheldahl were united in marriage in St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she remained a member until her passing. From that union, they welcomed three sons and two daughters into this world while farming near Lakota. Ruth and Ed farmed until retiring in 1980. Ruth had a love of gardening and flowers; keeping the back yard looking pretty for most of her years. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, quilt making and working word puzzles. Her cinnamon rolls were her hallmark item baked for family and friends. Ruth cherished her time with her family, with her children and families visiting frequently. She also shared her lifelong love of the Lord with her family. She is survived by: her children, Robert and Mavis Marlene Sheldahl of Albuquerque, NM, Gary and Eleanor Sheldahl of Forest City, Diane and Paul Geilenfeldt of Baxter, Sheryl Sheldahl Mulder of Prinsburg, MN, Nancy and Thomas Distler of Solon; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; one step great-great grandchild; brother and sister-inlaw, Otto and Alfa Hertzke; sister-in-law Charlene Hertzke; sister-in-law Shirley Sheldahl; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Edward; her parents; her son, Duane; great-grandson, Noah Mellema; her brothers, Maynard, Raymond and Charles; and sister, Elsie.

Sandra Bruns passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at her home in Sandra Bruns Titonka, at the age of 72. Memorial service was held on Saturday, March 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Titonka, with Reverends S. Kim and Trudy A. Peterson officiating. Inurnment was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Sandra Raye (Watson) Bruns was born July 2, 1941, in Fenton, the daughter of Rolland and Elizabeth (Gramenz) Watson. Her family later moved to Titonka, where she gradu1944-2014 ated from the Titonka High School in Services: 1959. She loved the beauty of the Christmas season and established many beloved family traditions. Sandie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, WELCA and enjoyed her neighborhood birthday club. She was surrounded by her family who were amazed by her grace, courage, strength and faith throughout her cancer journey. She is survived by: her husband, LeRoy Bruns of Titonka; daughters, LeAnn Bruns of Ankeny, Cindy (Greg) Hoover of Johnston, Wendy (Brad) Harms of Wesley, Patricia (Travis) Hassebroek of Buffalo Center; grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Hemesath, Mitchell Hoover, Megan (Nick) Ratcliff, Lindsay (Zach) Haugland, Weston and Owen Harms, Nicolas and Paige Hassebroek; great-granddaughter, Elliott Grace Hemesath; siblings, Jon Watson of Rock Island, IL, Elizabeth Hasty of Mason City, Steve (Ann) Watson of Urbandale. She is also survived by several in-laws and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; and brother-in law, Kenneth Hasty. Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of the Heartland, 1519 S. Phillips St. Algona or to the Pancreatic Cancer Network at www.pancan.org. Winnebago County Courthouse News SENTENCES AND PLEAS Marcel Cook, 22, Forest City, pled guilty to OWI-first offense, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic accident investigated by the Forest City Police Dept., Jan. 31. Cook was sentenced to serve 48 hours in jail, and was ordered to pay a $1,250 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. Cook must follow through with all substance abuse treatment recommendations and will have his license revoked by the DOT. Cory Doyle, 22, Albert Lea, MN, pled guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C felony, stemming from an incident investigation by the Lake Mills Police Dept., Jan. 17, 2013. Doyle was sentenced to serve an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed 10 years, and was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, applicable surcharges, court costs, and restitution. The prison sentence, fine and criminal surcharge were suspended. Edwards will be on probation for three years, and as a term of probation, Doyle will be confined to BEJE Clark Residential Facility for 180 days or until maximum benefits are achieved. Storm Draheim, 58, Mason City, pled guilty to Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor, stemming from a traffic stop by the Forest City Police Dept., Aug. 8, 2013. Draheim was sentenced to serve 14 days in jail, and was ordered to pay a $625 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. Draheim will have his license revoked by the DOT. Spencer Edwards, 23, Albert Lea, MN, pled guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C felony, stemming from an incident investigated by the Lake Mills Police Dept., Jan. 17, 2013. Edwards was sentenced to serve an indeterminate prison sentence not to exceed 10 years and was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, applicable surcharges, court costs, and restitution. Michael Peterson, 31, Forest City, pled guilty to Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Forest City Police Dept., June 8, 2013. Peterson was sentenced to serve 48 hours in jail, and was ordered to pay a $315 fine, applicable surcharges, and court costs. Delante Thompson, 22, Detroit, MI, pled guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance, a serious misdemeanor, and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor, stemming from an investigation by the Forest City Police Dept., Jan. 20. Thompson was sentenced to serve 36 days in jail, and was ordered to pay fines totaling $630, applicable surcharges, and court costs. He must obtain a

North Iowa Kindergarten Round-Up Wednesday
Kindergarten Round-Up will be held at North Iowa Community Schools this Wednesday, Mar. 19. Children who will be five years of age by September 15 are invited to attend a day in Kindergarten and Kindergarten-Prep. The incoming kindergartners will get a chance to meet each other, meet the teachers,
and explore the kindergarten classrooms from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Parents are to bring their child to the Kindergarten, Kindergarten-Prep rooms at 9:00 and pick them up at 11:00. Parents will spend time with teachers the evening of March 19 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Elementary/High School Commons.
They will hear presentations from the Kindergarten and KindergartenPrep teachers, Transportation Director, School Nurse, Elementary Secretary and Elementary Principal. All voted aye. Motion carried. A Department Head meeting was held. A Risk Management and Safety Committee meeting was held. Karla Niederkofler, Auditor met with Dean Schade, IMWCA and discussed measures the County should take to continue to keep premiums low. Some ways suggested were to increase our safety training, have internal auditing to make sure employees are in compliance with safety policies, have prephysicals for new hires, designate a physician for work injuries, and have a return to work policy. Scott Meinders, Engineer discussed Secondary Road matters including snow removal and upcoming bridge/culvert projects. On a motion by Durby and seconded by Stensrud the Supervisors moved to approve the following Engineer’s office salaries for fiscal year 2015; Mark Johnson a 3% increase from $60,636.10 to $62,455.00, Doug Reisetter a 6% increase from $53,755.70 to $56,981.00 and Becky Ritzert a 3% increase from $43,251.76 to $44,549.00. Voting aye – Durby and Stensrud. Voting nay – Wubben. Motion carried. There was discussion as to why the Budget Hearing date had to be changed. Junior bowlers roll 700 series
Two members of the Buffalo Lanes Junior Bowling League rolled 700 series this past season. Spencer Armstrong rolled a 700 on January 21, when he bowled games of 243, 246 and 257 for a 746 series. Logan Knudson rolled his 700 on February 25, with games of 267, 244 and 192 for a 703 series. Armstrong, a freshman at North Iowa High School, is a member of the Buffalo Lanes team. Knudson, a fourth grader at North Iowa, is a member of the Casey’s team. The Junior League wrapped up its 14-week season on Tuesday, Mar. 4.
Cordell Eaton, son of Dave and Pam (Danger) Eaton, placed second in Class 3A at 220 pounds at the Iowa State Wrestling tournament held in Des Moines February 20-22. He was the Mississippi Athletic Conference champion and has been named to the Quad-City Times All-Metro Wrestling Team at 220 pounds. He is a junior at North Scott High School in Eldridge, IA, and ended his year with 46 wins and five losses, which were all to ranked opponents. The Council also discussed the misuse of the City dumpster, as there are issues with people disposing of things they shouldn’t be or placing items next to the dumpster.
