WORLD’S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS

ANALYSIS

THATFlightline would be namedthe world’s best racehorse of 2022 had beeninlittledoubt ever since his astonishing demolition of aquality field in the TVGPacificClassic at DelMar in early September– aperformance that sawhim finally outrank Baaeed That he wasthe best horseinthe worldlastyear is not in question, but is he deservingofa ratingthat matches Frankel’sbenchmark140 from 2012?

Comparingdirtformagainst turf tenyears apartisclearly problematic and this is as much aboutopinion as conventional handicapping, butfor ourmoneythe answerisa firm‘no’.

Therehavebeenmanychanges to the scopeofthe rankings over the years, with NorthAmerican horses firstincludedin1995, buteveninterms of thecurrent system it’s abig call.

In rating Flightline the equal of Frankel, the official handicappers have taken arather bullish view of his form. Havingbeenrated 139 in the interim editions of the World’sBest RacehorseRankingsinthe autumn, the 1lb nudgeto140 mightbe minimal, butit’sa significantmove.

While Flightline is alsorated 140 on RacingPostRatings, that compares to apeak RPRof143 for Frankel, afigure that wasachieved on twooccasions, over amile and then amileand a quarter

It’s hard to quantify the merit of Flightline’s twostandout performances, particularlyhis thrashingby19and aquarter lengths of Dubai World Cupwinner Country Grammer in the Pacific Classic, and in terms of pounds-per-length handicappingitcould rate offthe scale.Heperformedtoa remarkable level at DelMar for ahorse having only his fifth start, andhis Breeders’ Cupwin wasn’t far behind either

Frankel’sequal? Why handicappers have got it wrongoverFlightline

Butwith just six races over an 18-month period the bodyof evidence isn’t quite theretorank alongside Frankel, achampion at two, three and four years old, with an unsurpassed sevensuccessive RPRs of 136+.

Still, Flightline is only the second horsetoachieveanRPR of 140 or aboveand rates clearly the best dirt horsesince RPRs began, and officially the best dirthorse since US horses were incorporated into the classifications, ahead of 1996 champion Cigar(135).

Both Flightline and Baaeed, with his official mark of 135, canbe considered greats, withBaaeed being recognised as thebestturfhorse since Frankel.

Defeatinhis final race in the Champion Stakes took little gloss from apreviously unbeaten record that includedsix open Group1sand peakedinthe Juddmonte International in August.Having proved himself the best milerin Europe, the stepupindistance at York proved the catalyst for an improved performance in asix-anda-half-length defeat of the similarly wide-margin 2021 winner Mishriff, and while the beaten horses ha done little for the form, he is st value for his RPR of 136.

Topthree-year-oldonthe planet leads surgeinbreakthrough year forJapan

rankings than Japan’stotal of 30, ahead of the US (26) and Britain (25).

OUTSIDE the fireworks providedbyFlightline and Baaeed,a breakthrough year for Japanwas the internationalstoryofthe year on the racecourse andthis hasbeen reflected in recordrepresentation in the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings

Flightline wasdeservedly top of the pile ahead of his British counterpart Baaeed, and horses from the US and Britain dominated the upper echelons of the rankings.Ofthe top 30, includingties,14weretrainedin Britain, ten in the US,fiveinJapan, fourinHongKong, three apiece in France and Ireland, twoinAustralia and one in Germany.

Butitisstrength in depth where Japanese racinghas seriously improved.Atotal of 48 in the rankings –whichare comprised of horses rated 115 or above–maintains steady improvementinthe last decade that hadpreviouslyyieldeda peak of 44 in 2019 beforedipping to 37 and 42 in the last twoyears.

Japanisstill thirdinthe overall list behind the US (62) and Britain (56) butithas threetimes, ormore, as many horses in the rankings as countries likeFrance, Ireland and Hong Kong.

Another sign of the health of Japanese racingisthe fact no country hasmoretrainers representedinthe

Japan’sstrength wasmostnotably seenonthe worldstage at Meydan in Marchatthe Dubai World Cup meeting, with victories in fiveofthe eightraces, including twoGroup 1s, with Panthalassa sharingthe spoils in the DubaiTurfand Shahryarlanding the Sheema Classic. Thethird-placed horses in both races were also Japanese-trained SuccessinEuropeproved elusive, includinginJapan’s holygrail of the Prix de l’ArcdeTriomphe, with Titleholder the best of four runnersin 11th.But while it does feel likewe’ve beensayingthis forever, the current upward trend in Japanese racing really does suggestitis only amatter oftime beforethe countrybreaksits duckinthe Longchampshowpiece Equinoxisclearly the mostlikelyof the current crop. His mark of 126 makeshim the highest-ratedthreeyear-old in the world, oneposition ahead of the 2022 Arcrunner-up Vadeni. Victoryinthe ArimaKinen mightwellhaveset him up for atrip to Saudi Arabia in February, which is eagerly anticipated.

Boldog Hos(120) wassecond to Equinoxinthe ArimaKinen butisstill lightly racedand likely to improve further

Given the growingstrength in Japan, it mightalsobeworth making an earlynote of the nextgeneration. Dura Erede(115) and LibertyIsland (112) were the highest-ratedtwoyear-old colt and two-year-old filly respectively lastyear on RacingPost Ratings. How high mighttheyplace in the rankings this time nextyear?

ANALYSIS

Matt Gardner o two-year-olds

ALTHOUGH unable to match 2021 champion two-year-old Native Trail’s unbeaten season, Little BigBear surpassed his level of form, accordingtothe European rankings announced yesterday, thesameday as the world rankings for older horses.

Little BigBear’s ratingof124 places him 2lb ahead of NativeTrail’s figure and 4lb ahead of 2020 champion St Mark’s Basilica

While he fell shortofthe benchmarkset in recenttimes by Pinatubo(128), it’s worth remembering that formfigures, certainlyinrelationtojuveniles, are almostasmuch aboutopportunity as theyare ability.

Little BigBear’s season wascut

shortthrough injuryfollowing his runawaysuccessinthe Phoenix Stakes in August.Pinatubo, Native Trail and St Mark’s Basilicaall achieved their peak juvenile figuresin Septemberorlater, sogiven the opportunity to runinone of the leadingtwo-year-old races at the end of the season it’s reasonable to suggestthat Little BigBear would rate higher still.

An underlyingtheme to the rankings in recentyearshas beenthe lackofdepth forAidan O’Brien, the number of juveniles he’s trainedrated 110 or higher havingbeenonthe wane since 2018. That slidehas been haltedthis year –hehas eighthorses in that bracket, up from just three and themostsince he hadten in 2019 –albeit without seeinghim return to what could be described as the‘glory years’, when he had15or16for three years in arow from 2015 to 2018.

There’splentyofreason for O’Brien to hold optimismfor the forthcoming season, despite the retirementof Blackbeard duetoinjury. Hissquad

will be led by the ante-postfavourites for the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby, Little BigBear and Vertem Futurity winner AugusteRodin, while Espionageand Alexandroupolis also contribute to what looks apromising bunch of middle-distance prospects Foremostamong thoselikely to be challengingLittle BigBear for the first Classic of the season is Noble Style, thehighest-rated juvenile trainedby CharlieAppleby. His season wasalso cutshort after he createda deep impression in the Gimcrack, which wasenoughtosee himtakehighrank despite his lackofexperience

Chaldean, RoyalScotsman and Nostrum, the firstthree home in the Dewhurst, alsoappeal as likely Guineas contenders, whileSakheer could go that route or stickto sprinting. He hasthe pedigreeto suggesthe’ll stay amile, although he hasbeensoimpressive over six furlongs that the Commonwealth Cup maywellbehis target

It’s not just with thecolts that O’Brien boasts astronghand, with

Breeders’ CupJuvenileFillies Turf winner Meditate ranked thirdamong the fillies. That is alsoa strong division, headedbythe unbeaten Tahiyraand Commissioning, whose figuresrank them alongside the high bar setbyInspiral and Tenebrism in 2021.

TahiyrahandedMeditate a two-and-a-quarter-length beating onjusther second startinthe MoyglareStudStakes and ratesan excitingprospect, as does Fillies’Mile winner Commissioning.

Although we took aslightly lower view of the Newmarketform, giving CommissioninganRPR of 112, she’s nonethelessa promisingindividual. A clash between that trio in the 1,000 Guineas would be one to savour European Two-Year-Old Classificiation
