About Uppingham School Uppingham is one of the UK’s foremost co-educational independent boarding schools. Originally founded in 1584, our Foundation Charter was granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1587. The School was raised to its present eminence by the great Victorian educationalist, Edward Thring. Thring’s visionary ideas for all round education are still as relevant and inspirational today and guide Uppingham in providing forward-thinking schooling, with both a national and international outlook, in the 21st Century. Today, we educate 805 pupils aged 13 to 18, offering state-of-the-art science, music and sports facilities, a strong academic profile and outstanding pastoral care. The cornerstone of Uppingham’s philosophy is that every child is capable of excellence.

Location Uppingham is a beautiful small market town set in a rural area of central England. It is about 100 miles north of London, and roughly midway between the cities of Leicester and Peterborough. Strong transport links allow visitors easy access to the rest of the country. The School resides in the centre of Uppingham and its 15 boarding houses are located around the town in a collegiate style, not dissimilar to that of Oxford and Cambridge. The town hosts a market every Friday and has a good range of independent shops, with plenty more to be found in the nearby county town of Oakham.

Further Afield Rutland is England’s smallest county and is cited as one of the best places to live in the country; it certainly lives up to its motto, Multum in Parvo (much in little). This rural gem is the perfect place to spend time enjoying the great outdoors. Rutland Water offers a multitude of leisure pursuits including water sports, cycling, fishing and bird watching, while Rutland’s many attractive villages, set in the glorious English countryside, are home to picture postcard cottages and traditional country pubs. Within the county, or very close by, you will discover the beautiful Georgian town of Stamford (which is also the location of Burghley House, a magnificent 16th century mansion set in extensive parklands), Rockingham Castle and Oakham Castle, both fine examples of Norman architecture. Oakham Castle houses a unique collection of ornate horseshoes, traditionally given by visitors to the county, including Royalty and nobility; the oldest of these dates back to 1470. A short drive away, in the city of Leicester, you will find the National Space Centre, King Richard III Visitor Centre for those interested in the history of England’s monarchy, and lots of opportunities for shopping. Or for an all-out shopping and leisure experience head to Rushden Lakes near Northampton, where you will find rock climbing, boating, cinema, food options to suit all tastes and of course endless shopping!

Within 1.5 hours you can reach Cambridge, Lincoln, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham, which offers many wellknown visitor attractions including Cadbury World, The Black Country Living Museum, Think Tank: Birmingham Science Museum and the Jewellery Quarter.
