Serenoa Repens and its anti-baldness properties

Also known as Saw Palmetto, Serenoa Repens is a small palm with broad leaves and dark red / brown berries. Its origin is linked to the territories of the South of the United States (Florida), of Southern Europe and of North Africa.

Its therapeutic properties have been known since ancient times. In fact, indigenous peoples have always used the extract of this plant to naturally treat urinary tract disorders, such as enlarged prostate. Subsequently, it was found that those who used Serenoa Repens to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy also benefited from another part of their body: the hair.

Today, we know that prostate enlargement and hormonal hair loss have one enemy in common: dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By reducing DHT levels, Serenoa Repens thus represents a valid natural remedy for both ailments.

Serenoa Repens: how it works 

At a trichological (as well as urological) level, the inhibitory properties of Serenoa Repens are due to the active ingredient present in its berries: beta-sitosterol. The latter, in fact, is able to inhibit the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, the enzyme that transforms testosterone into DHT (the baldness hormone).

More specifically, the mechanism of action of the extract of Serenoa Repens is similar to that of dutasteride, in that the activity of both type I and type II 5-alpha-reductase enzyme is reduced. By regulating hormone levels, Saw Palmetto extract thus significantly contributes to reducing hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia.

DHT and hair 

Multiple studies in the trichological field have shown that dihydrotestosterone is considered the main cause of the miniaturization of the hair follicle and, therefore, of its progressive thinning. In this context, the genetic component is essential because DHT has a negative action at the follicular level only in those who show this genetic predisposition. From here, it is also easy to understand why baldness is defined as "androgenetic" (hormones + genetics).

Given its inhibitory action, Serenoa Repens can represent a valid natural alternative to finasteride, the most used drug to combat androgenetic alopecia. Unlike the latter, however, with natural anti-DHT such as Serenoa there is no risk of incurring side effects such as water retention, fat accumulation, gynecomastia and decreased libido.

Although Serenoa Repens supplements are powerful natural remedies, their intake isn’t recommended for women of childbearing age. Before undertaking any therapy (even if natural), contacting a specialist is always the first step to take.

Serenoa Repens supplements: mono or multiple components?

In order for the Serenoa Repens extract to be effective, it is essential to use the correct dosage by taking quality and high-titration supplements. Generally, in the tablets of Serenoa Repens is used a fat-soluble extract standardized to 90-95% in fatty acids in 320 mg. In this case, these are mono-component natural supplements, which use only the extract of Serenoa as an active ingredient.
