Abstract
Arborescent or shrubby bamboos. Rhizomes monopodium. Culms diffuse, erect; internodes terete, grooved above branches, pith spongy; nodes weakly prominent. Culm bud 1. Branches 3 at mid-culm nodes, up to 5 apically, spreading. Culm leaves deciduous, sparsely setose, margins ciliate; auricles and oral setae present or absent; blades erect or reflexed, lanceolate or triangular lanceolate. Foliage leaves several per branchlet; auricles and oral setae present or absent; blades usually medium-sized, secondary veins many-paired, transverse veins conspicuous. Inflorescence racemose or paniculate, terminal; spikelets robust, florets a few, pedicel present; glumes 2–4; lemma large, many veined, transverse veins obvious or not, apex acuminate or shortly mucronate; palea usually shorter than lemma, 2-keeled; lodicules 3, usually transparent at the margin; stamens 6, filaments free, anthers yellow; style 1, stigmas 3, plumose. New shoots spring or early summer, flowering summer or autumn.
