Summary
The names of 18 species and two varieties of Dioscorea L. (Dioscoreaceae) described from the Old World (Africa excluded) by D. Prain and I. H. Burkill have been typified after careful examination of original material from various herbaria (A, B, BISH, BK, BM, CAL, CAS, E, F, G, GH, K, L, M, NY, P, PNH, SING, U, US) and protologues. Lectotypes are selected for Disocorea aspersa, D. cumingii, D. daunaea, D. fordii, D. hainanensis, D. inaequifolia, D. kerrii, D. lepcharum (D. lepcharum var. vera and D. lepcharum var. bhamoica), D. loheri, D. merrillii, D. melanophyma, D. palawana, D. pulverea, D. pseudotomentosa, D. scortechinii, D. trimenii, D. wattii and D. yunnanensis.
