Abstract

Castanopsis hainanensis Merrill, an endemic species distributed in Hainan, China, is an insular subspecies of Castanopsis indica. In this study, the whole chloroplast (cp) genome of C. hainanensis was determined by Illumina pair-end sequencing. The complete cp genome is 160,631 bp in length, there are a pair of 25,687 bp inverted repeat region separated by one large single copy region of 90,328 and one small single copy region of 18,929. The cp genome encoded 40 transfer RNA genes, eight ribosomal RNA genes and 84 protein-coding genes. The overall GC content of the whole cp genome is 36.8%. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that C. hainanensis is closely related to Castanopsis echinocarpa with strong bootstrap values.
