Elbow Pathology: Traumatic

MRI of the Upper Extremity

Abstract

Traumatic and overuse elbow injuries are frequent causes of work-related or recreational upper extremity pain in adults. Additionally, the increase in frequency and intensity of training youth athletes experience during year-round competition leads to excessive stress on the immature musculoskeletal system. Athletes who perform overhead throwing activities are particularly susceptible to the development of elbow injuries. While history and clinical examination can often point to an area of concern, imaging plays a role in identifying all injuries and determining severity of pathology. The complex anatomy of the elbow joint consists of static and dynamic stabilizers that are stressed under different ranges of motion, leading to predictable patterns of injuries.
