Abstract

Renanthera is a popular tropical genus with 22 species many admired for their branching inflorescences that bear a splendid display of red flowers. Plants are monopodial, epiphytic or saxicolous, initially rooted on the ground but clambering over bushes, trees and rocks in full sun. Stems are upright with long internodes and thick, leathery, bilobed leaves that sheath the stem at their base. Inflorescence is lateral, paniculate, laxly many flowered. Flowers are red, orange, buff with red spots or yellow; star-shaped and flat; dorsal sepal and petals linear, lateral sepals broader, commonly undulate. Renanthera is widely employed to produce red hybrids within Vandeae: they form the source of red in Southeast Asian orchid cut-flower.
