Abstract
Bletilla striata is one of the oldest Chinese medicinal herbs. In addition to describing its traditional usage and its extensive phytochemistry, this chapter discusses the role of B. striata as an embolising agent for cancer treatment and its use as nanoparticles for gene therapy and drug delivery. B. striata kills liver flukes and acts against bacteria responsible for dental caries. Numerous phytochemicals have been isolated from this species. Other orchid genera described are Brachycorithis, Bromheadia and Bulbophyllum.
