Abstract
Sandy dry grasslands occur on the coasts and in the inland. In addition to the naturally occurring succession stages after disturbance, it is primarily traditional forms of land use that have often created a diverse mosaic of vegetation structures. The extreme site conditions of the early successional stages on sandy sites are explained and their importance especially for species and habitat protection is emphasized. In addition to the usual procedures for the restoration of species-rich grassland, specific measures on sandy dry and nutrient-poor grasslands are discussed using examples from restoration practice and experimental approaches of restoration ecology. As a case study, the former military training area Döberitz is presented, on which a structurally rich landscape with a wide variety of succession stages is being restored and maintained with flexible management, including the impact of megaherbivores.
