Part of the book series: The Mycota ((MYCOTA,volume 5B))

Abstract

Rust-infected wheat leaf fragments have been found in a storage jar from the Late Bronze Age filled with wheat grains (Kislev 1982). This report, together with numerous others of plant diseases in the ancient literature, obviously indicating rust fungus infections, emphasizes the importance of these pathogens for human food production (Lehmann et al. 1937; Chester 1946; Schafer et al. 1984). In his book on agriculture, Duhamel du Monceau (1779) mentions stem rust “as an extreme nuisance: the most beautiful grains are reduced to nothing as soon as the stem is completely covered by rust”.
