Budget-Friendly Way To Explore The Norfolk Broads

The best way to see the Norfolk Broads is on the water without a doubt! However, spending time on the water can be pricy, especially if you look into hiring a private boat for the day. Thankfully, there is a budget-friendly way to explore the Norfolk Broads on the water!

The Mississippi Paddle Steamer

There is a Mississippi Paddle Steamer, which does daily trips along the Norfolk Broads. It goes from the beautiful village of Horning, supposedly one of the prettiest villages in the Broads National Park! A paddle steamer may not be the typical style boat you expect to see on the Broads, however, it’s certainly a fun way to explore the waterways!

Cost

At the time we visited, it cost us £10 per person for a 90-minute boat ride. We booked online, however, you can pay on arrival too!

For up-to-date prices, please check out their website: https://www.southern-comfort.co.uk/book-now

Please note: if you want to pay on arrival, bring cash. When we visited, they could only expect cash as their card machine no longer works in the area.

Parking

There is a paid car park located next to The Swan Hotel, where the boat departs.

SatNav: The Swan Hotel, Lower Street, Horning, NR12 8AA

If you are looking for a free car park, you can park at the Village Hall, just up the road. However, this car park does get full, so I recommend getting there early in morning the to get a spot!

SatNav: Mill Hill, Horning, NR12 8LH

Both car parks are suitable for campervans!

The Route

The route starts and ends in the village of Horning, next to The Swan Hotel. The Mississippi Paddle Steamer talks you along the River Bure, and out to Ranworth Broad. Along the way you get to see lots of beautiful, old thatched houses made from the locally grown Norfolk reed, a windmill, and if you are lucky you might even spot a Heron!
