Our photographer recommended this hotel to us as a place for us to take our engagement pictures. We looked online and we were very impressed by the decor. The rooms are a bit small, but really, what else do you need other than a bed, toilet, and shower? The decor in the rooms are to die for. All the attendants are amazingly nice and kind. They always make sure to see if you need anything when you are leaving or arriving the Hotel. They go out of their way to make sure your stay is 100%. The neighborhood is a tad sketchy, however there is an awesome park right across the street, and you are stones throw from Downtown Sacramento- which is very popular! There are so many great places and drink around there too.
I would absolutely stay here again- counting on it, in fact!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 14, 2016
This is a really beautiful hotel in downtown Sacramento. I was privileged to stay here thanks to an awesome friend who was treated me for my birthday weekend! Honestly the room, while nice, was still kinda small and antique-ish which is what I think they were going for. The bathroom was almost as big as the room and actually more interesting to be in since it felt more modern and had political cartoons on the wall.
This hotel doesn't have that many amenities like a pool (I think) but I think staying here is all about the history and proximity to things. I'd stay again if I was presented with a choice to go or not especially because I like boutique hotels in general.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - John K.Sacramento, CA04821Feb 12, 2019
So location you cannot help with local homeless yelling as they move about. But it does disrupt an otherwise interesting historical hotel front.
Check in service helpful and friendly and very busy.
There is no breakfast included inn room charge as you might have with some marriot property.
Instead it's a restaurant similar to many Hilton properties.
The room is extra ordinarily small. It is old so one must understand they stayed with original style from 100 years ago.
No closet for suit case
Bathroom has no counter space I guess they didn't have a need a century ago.
There are only three outlets for power so remember this when planning to recharge.
The bed had blood stained sheets and a clump of hair from previous guest. With simple request they replaced sheets following day.
Shower walk in shower with curtain. The curtain blows outward with the water pressure from the shower. A little odd but with some work pulling the whole curtain in.
Now the bed. Ahhhh this was 10 of 10 for me.
The down comforter was perfect the mattress topper was Asheville 105x96.
The pillows similar Asheville down had the perfect softness while being supportive.
Best hotel bed ever. Made getting up the following day regretful. I need to know where to buy this exact everything for a bed.
Rooms were over 300 a night. So review 3 of 5 with expectations versus actual experience.
Still would come here for the quality of the bed alone.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amanda S.Roseville, CA041Aug 25, 2018
Don't get me wrong....The staff is amazing. However....this is NOT a hotel for families with young children. I'm currently sitting in my room and the wedding venue is rocking the entire hotel. And there are people talking/standing in the open stairwell. It's so LOUD. And all three of my children are awake due to the noise.
Not how I wanted to spend my last night in California. :(Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jerry B.Central Sacramento, Sacramento, CA421Dec 29, 2017
I think the four stars that this hotel has is pretty accurate. It's a nice place with a nice, classic American vibe. It wasn't too busy during my stay in the winter. The location is right in the middle of downtown, with plenty of places to eat or have a cup of coffee nearby.
The rooms are a bit small and a bit outdated. It definitely could use a bit of a renovation and update. The rooms are relatively quiet though, which is nice. Overall, the rooms themselves are decent and i would stay here again if i were looking in downtown. When I booked, I paid around $140 a night, which i thought was pretty cheap.
I also tried the restaurant that is attached to the hotel, Grange. It's OK and is a bit overpriced. I'd recommend going somewhere else for food.
Last thing is that they have a little lounge on the second floor where you can hang out and do work, and it's pretty quiet up there. I've attached a picture.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 19, 2018
We stayed here this past weekend. I would like to give a 4.5 star review, but here is why I cannot:
Their emergency alarm system started going off in the early morning telling us to evacuate via the stairs. Safety first, so we did it. We were on the 12th floor, so this was not pleasant nor easy and taking all of our belongings was impossible. All guests on all floors had to do the same thing. After evacuating, we all were told it was a false alarm, and to go back to our room. Once back in our room, the alarm went off again. Back down we went. Again, told it was a false alarm. Back in our room, the alarm went off yet again. We called the front desk, they said no need to evacuate. Alarm was silenced. A few minutes later, it went off again and we were told to evacuate. We did. Again, false alarm. By this time, it was late morning, and I needed to get in the shower as check out is noon (they would not offer a late check out - 1pm was latest they could do). I called the front desk, said I need to shower, asked if we are done with the alarms. They assured me that it absolutely would not happen again. I get in the shower, shampoo in hair, what do you know, the alarms go off again! I decided this time to ignore it and take my chances. Good lord!
At checkout, we expressed our displeasure. This ruined our stay and our day, honestly. Hard to bounce back from a morning that starts like this. They were only willing to comp us the valet parking. I feel like the room should have been discounted, as we were unable to receive the full benefit of our stay. The explanation we were given for the alarms was that "engineering was doing some work (on a Sunday!) and they kept tripping the alarms accidentally". We are in construction management and build hotels for a living, so we know there is very little likelihood that this is true. No engineer comes in on a Sunday morning during a holiday week. As we were discussing things with the front desk, the alarm went off twice more. I felt like the gent at the desk was in a terrible position and did try to handle it as best he could.
All of this aside...the place is charming. The rooms are quaint and comfy. Most of the staff is delightful and accommodating. The in-room dining is top notch. Best pancakes of my life, and I have had a lot of pancakes. Awesome cheeseburger, too. Love the old time political artwork and all of the old time ambiance.
It is a shame about the alarm situation. We are loyal Marriott Rewards Members and feel like the guests should have been fairly compensated for the interruptions to our stay.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - JB A.Healdsburg, CA6424Sep 7, 2018
Lovely. Simply lovely is all I can say. We spent one night here and could not have stayed in a more amazing hotel. It's historic, so from the moment you walk in you are totally wowed by its elegance coolness...AND every single person we encountered working in this hotel was gracious and nice. The hotel was beautiful and our room was just amazing. The only thing I would change was to have more light in the bathroom, but even that was not such a big deal. Not only that, but the restaurant on site, The Grange, was amazing - a little on the expensive side, but the food and drinks we had were SO good that it was well worth it!!!
Obviously I would not hesitate to go back to this hotel.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 11, 2014
Love the Joie De Vie family of pet friendly hotels. We had a corner room, 434. It was very quiet and comfortable. Staff was friendly. We enjoyed the historic setting and downtown location. The modern upgrades made it enjoyable. Quiet air and effective air conditioning. Well appointed bathroom. Comfortable bedding.
Ways to bump it up a notch. Have coffee for guests in the lobby in the morning. There's a coffee maker with coffee mate in the room. there's a couple of coffee places around the corner but prefer really good coffee where we stay. minor detail. Also, no water dish or cushion for the dog. We brought out own, if we asked, I would guess they would provide a bowl. They did offer our guy biscuits at arrival and check out. The park across the street was great for a morning walk. In the evening it was a short walk to the eateries on K St. and to Capitol Park which was beautiful. Loved the distant sound of the church bells in the distance. I think they end at 9pm and start hourly again at 8am.
We would definitely come back. Note, front desk said best rates are to book directly with the hotel from the website. Not the first option if you use google.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ashley L.Los Angeles, CA2432121190Oct 25, 2015
This place is seriously less than mediocre. It does have a really nice aesthetic appeal but that's about it. I stayed here because I was in town for the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival.
Firstly, what kind of hotel doesn't give you a couple of bottles of water in your room?! Coming back to the room after rocking out in a field in the middle of nowhere is pretty dehydrating. Room service doesn't serve past 11, so I couldn't order food and some water and was too tired to go out. So we got two mini bottles from guest services.
When we woke up, hungover and beat from the festival we tried ordering room service. I've NEVER been to a hotel where they don't have enough staff to cover the phone when a guest orders food?! I kept calling and getting their voice mail, so I decided to call the front desk and they advised me to leave my order on the voicemail. So that's exactly what I did, left the order and my room number. HALF AN HOUR LATER... I get a call back from a woman who asks for the entire order again and then when it's delivered, it's WRONG. Completely pathetic on staff and management.
Are you that cheap that you can't staff the hotel properly? AND THE FOOD WAS COLD! The fruit that came with our dish looked like it was a month old! This hotel sucks.
If you're in the area avoid this place entirely. Just stay at the Hyatt. Or Motel 6. Either way, it's better than here.
I pity the Yelpers below who think this place is worth more than 2 stars, they haven't experienced a truly nice hotel.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Lee Maree S.San Diego, CA11791Jun 20, 2018
I had my wedding across the street and did a room block here for guests and everyone found it to be nothing short of wonderful. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful, the restaurant was delicious, and the space was cozy and cool. Shout out to Alyson Bryan for her help with the room block. She was so patient with how many times I changed the number, always immediately sent over an updated invoice, and was so communicative. She was a gem to work with!
Additionally, my sisters rented out the private room of the Grange restaurant for a shower and everything was lovely. The service from Ethan was impeccable, there to top off our waters or bring whatever we wanted to us extremely promptly. I couldn't have had a better time. And the food was delicious and yummy as could be!
I would highly recommend this hotel and restaurant to anyone looking either for a special event or just an overnight stay! The rooms are bright and the bathrooms are clean and polished.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
