Leaves distributed evenly along stem, alternate, simple, unlobed, semi-succulent, base symmetrical, margin entire, blade not pellucid-punctate; leaf glands absent*; venation pinnate; domatia absent*; stipel-like appendages absent*. Petiole very short (leaves almost sessile), without swellings or bends at base or apex*, without glands. Inflorescence with or without axis, male inflorescences almost terminal, raceme-like or narrowly paniculate, female inflorescences axillary, 1–3- flowered; bracts small, bracteoles leaf-like; pedicels present, articulated (in females) or not. Male flowers: sepals 5, imbricate, free or partially fused, greenish; petals 0; disc inside the staminal whorl (intrastaminal); stamens 5, free; anther with conspicuous modification, thecae introrse in bud; pistillode absent. Female flowers: sepals 5, imbricate, free or partially fused, greenish, enlarged relative to other floral parts; petals 0; disc surrounding the ovary, annular; ovary locules 3, ovules per locule 2; styles 3, partially fused (in lower half), style 2-branched (i.e. each style divided, ultimate divisions per locule 2), styles or stigmas not flat*, surface smooth*; staminodes absent. Fruit dehiscent, veined, warty or tuberculate, greenish to brown; calyx persistent, large, reddish-purple; seed without appendage, covering or membranous layer, or with appendage at one end (caruncle) or minute partial covering; embryo flat, not minute, cotyledons leaf-like.
