Sedum japonica 'Tokyo Sun'

Tokyo Sun Sedum. If you have never used sun glasses to view a plant, this might be the time you will need them. I found this little Sedum in a garden center in Japan in 2006. The foliage is extremely fine and the habit is prostrate, but this particular selection has the most brilliant gold foliage of any plant that I have ever seen. Naturally the Japanese just call it "Ogon", which means "gold," but I thought that it deserved a more sophisticated cultivar name than that, so we are christening it as 'Tokyo Sun.' If you are familiar with Sedum makanoi 'Ogon,' you haven't seen anything yet! Sedum makanoi likes some shade, but 'Tokyo Sun' does better in sun. Every now and again, one might notice a tiny green reversion. Just pinch it out, but you might want to save some of this for another area of your garden. The RHS Dictionary gives this species a zone 7 hardiness, and a friend, Ozzie Johnson, has had the species in his zone 7 garden for several years with good success, but we don't know the ultimate hardiness of this cultivar. As far as I know, we made the first U.S. offering of this selection, but it has spread like wild fire. Since it is so dwarf, it makes an excellent groundcover in a container with larger companion plants.
