Massive Rock Climbing Gym Slated For Gowanus

The gym will have two floors dedicated to rock climbing, 40-foot high walls for roped climbing and a terrace with even more climbing.

GOWANUS, NY — A massive rock climbing gym is coming to Gowanus in a Nevins Street building tailor made for climbers, the owner said.

The $18 million project at 233 Nevins Street near Butler Street will boast two floors dedicated to rock climbing with 36,000 square feet of terrain, 40-foot high walls for roped climbing and a 4,400 square foot terrace for additional outdoor climbing.

The gym's owner felt the rock climber's paradise is a natural fit for a neighborhood known for taking fitness to the next level.

“Gowanus has become a hub for unique, non-traditional forms of fitness and recreation — including circus arts, archery, and axe throwing,” said Mike Wolfert, owner of The Cliffs. “We aim to bring an exceptional new rock climbing experience to the mix."

The Cliffs currently has three locations: one in Dumbo, Brooklyn, another in Westchester and its flagship location in Long Island City, Queens.

A gym is slated for Harlem later this year and the Gowanus spot is expected to open in 2020 under a 25-year lease in partnership with JBS Project Management and Atkins & Breskin.

A full-scale gym will also be available at the Gowanus location with yoga studios, group fitness centers, saunas and a store hawking climbing and sports gear.
