Looking at the Arcade CD games, it's kind of strange to me that some of them would feel the need to bother. I'm pretty much guessing that all the Arcade card does, is increase the memory buffer from the CD, allowing multiple sprites and background tiles to be loaded from the CD and stored on the card. It certainly doesn't allow for more sprites.
To this end, it's somewhat surprising that more shootemups weren't released for the card. Sapphire seems like one of the titles that actually uses that extra space, Strider too. And I'd possibly give the SNK fighters the benefit of the doubt, with large, complicated sprites.
But looking at Battlefield '94 (which I'd originally intended to write about before I got lost in a train of thought) seems like they've purposefully hamstrung their potenial sales by making it Arcade CD, but where they've utilized it, I can begin to say. The sprites are tiny, and when you look at Capcom's Muscle Bomber, or Technos's Wrestlefest (admittedly paragons of the genre) it's a missed opportunity. I can't actually find a review of the game, sad face, but seeing as the Arcade CD is a pretty small mini-collection, and I already own the more sought-after titles (Sapphire bootie permitting) it's a nice little collection to cross off.
Then we have Janshin Densetsu, a Majong RPG. Does that *need* to be an Arcade title?
I definitely feel like about half the Arcade titles actively do the system a disservice, because they detract from the quality of the pool. I think it's much better to go the way of the "arcade-enhanced" titles like 3x3 eyes.
Anyway, let's talk about the Arcade CD games.
