Why Oscar Winner Marcia Gay Harden Feels She'd 'Never' Have a Chance to Win Now

The 59-year-old actress won the Oscar in 2001 for her role in Pollock

Marcia Gay Harden won an Oscar in 2001 but doesn’t think she’d have what it takes to win again.

In an interview with PeopleTV, the 59-year-old actress said, “There’s so much more campaigning now.”

“It feels that if you don’t go to a party and shake a hand, you don’t have a chance. Mine was odd because I wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe, I wasn’t nominated for a SAG,” she revealed. “I feel like I would never have a chance now.”

She continued, “It feels like the machine is a little bit bigger to me, but the glory is still the same, the honor of it is still the same.”

Gay Harden won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2001 for her role in Pollock. She was nominated again in the same category in 2004 for Mystic River.

As for this awards season, the Love You to Death actress said the real head-turner was Roma‘s Yalitza Aparicio, who was nominated for Best Actress for her role in the Alfonso Cuarón film.

“I cannot imagine what the girl from Roma feels like,” she said. “This was a schoolteacher who was plucked from some little village from Mexico. She’s walking on the red carpet for leading actress!”

She added, “That’s a real fairytale. That’s a real princess story.”

Her Damages costar Glenn Close was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Wife, which took 14 years to make.

When asked if Gay Harden had well-wishes for Close, she said, “Well wishes for everybody! And of course, for her, she is amazing.”

Love You to Death premieres on Lifetime on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. ET.
