Viggo Mortensen brought his son Henry to the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards on Monday night, where the actor was honored for his work in the Oscar-nominated movie Green Book. Mortensen, 60, shares Henry, 31, with his ex-wife, singer Exene Cervenka. Mortensen is now in a longterm relationship with Spanish actress Ariadna Gil and Henry is his only child. The Green Book star received the best actor award at the annual awards ceremony. Other winners at the AARP’s big night included Glenn Close, who won best actress for her role in The Wife and Spike Lee, who won the directing prize for BlacKkKlansman. Viggo Mortensen and son Henry. (The movie also won the award for best motion picture, musical or comedy at the Golden Globes in January.) During the evening, Mortensen and his son were seen mingling with other celebrity guests — including Mortensen’s Green Book costar Linda Cardellini and basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The actor was at a Q&A for the potential Oscar contender — which deals with issues of racism and segregation — alongside his costar Mahershala Ali. Patti Perret/Universal In a statement to PEOPLE at the time, Mortensen apologized for his choice of words, saying, “Last night I participated in a Q&A session moderated by Elvis Mitchell following a screening of Green Book in Los Angeles. In making the point that many people casually used the ‘N’ word at the time in which the movie story takes place, in 1962, I used the full word.” Viggo Mortensen Apologizes for Using the N-Word as Costar Mahershala Ali Says It Was ‘Hurtful’ The former Lord of the Rings actor clarified that “although my intention was to speak strongly against racism, I have no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing that word in any context, especially from a white man.” Mortensen also said he does not “use the word in private or in public.” “I am very sorry that I did use the full word last night, and will not utter it again,” he said. Green Book is in theaters now.
