And in December, director James Cameron told PEOPLE that Avatar 3 “is right on track” after it was originally set to be released on Dec. 20, 2024, but was pushed back to Dec. 19, 2025.

Speaking about the process of making the third Avatar movie, Cameron shared that "three is actually much more straightforward than two," in terms of production.

"Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done," he reflected on the process of making Avatar: The Way of Water.

He also spoke about the fourth Avatar movie, which is set to be released in 2029.

"We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back,” he told PEOPLE. “And so the part where we come back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we'll start on that after three is released."

Avatar: The Way of Water, grossed a colossal $2.3 billion worldwide but didn't unseat Avatar's throne, which stands as the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion.

As for what fans can expect from movie three, Cameron confirmed that Kate Winslet will return to reprise her role as Ronal. He also added that Winslet "went to school" learning from "a husband and wife shaman practice" to master techniques she will employ in the next Avatar.
