    Description

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is an attractive dwarf tree fern that is sure to turn heads! This elegant fern is native to tropical and subtropical regions and is popular among gardeners for its symmetrical crown of glossy, bright green feather-like fronds.

Silver Lady Fern is an evergreen, semi-tender to tender dwarf tree fern with simplified leaflets (or pinnae) of lime-green with softly undulating margins. Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is dimorphic and has both sterile and fertile fronds on the same plant. The fertile frond leaflets are slightly more narrow than those on the sterile frond. The glossy bright green upright fronds grow in a rosette-like whorl atop a short trunk. The short central trunk is slow to develop. Considered a medium sized fern, Silver Lady Fern will grow around 3-4 ft. tall when mature.

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is a fantastic fern for shady areas with moist soils and looks great in tropical, meadow, or woodland gardens in mass plantings, as an accent fern, or in containers. It can also be grown indoors in bright, indirect light.

The fabulous feathery fronds of Silver Lady Fern are stunning and add visual interest and texture in a shady landscape. In the right conditions, Blechnum ‘Silver Lady’ is easy to grow and low maintenance in California’s mild climate gardens.

    Plant Care

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady is not particular about soil type or pH but does best in bright shady sites with moist but well draining soil. Plant in a location protected from sun, cold, and wind. Direct sun exposure will burn the leaves. Temperature, light intensity, soil moisture, and humidity, all contribute to the stress or success of your fern.

Native to tropical climates, Silver Lady Fern prefers humid weather and consistent moisture and is beautiful as an indoor plant in bright indirect light. Be sure to maintain humidity and moisture and avoid watering with hard water if possible if growing indoors.

After planting your Silver Lady Fern, water deeply and regularly for several weeks to reduce plant stress and facilitate root development. Sensitive to irregular irrigation, it is important to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. The amount of water required is dependent on several environmental factors such as wind, temperature, soil type, and light intensity. Apply a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture.

Pruning is not necessary, but any dead or damaged fronds can be removed at the base to improve the plant's appearance.

Silver Lady Fern is a semi-tender fern suited for USDA growing zones 10-11, hardy to 30℉. It is an evergreen dwarf tree fern that does not go dormant or lose its leaves. Semi-tender ferns grow best with nighttime temperatures that are mostly above 50℉ where freezing temperatures are rare. Frost may discolor, damage, or kill the fern depending on the duration of the low temperatures. Semi-tender ferns grow well in coastal southern California.

    FAQ's

Q: What is a dimorphic fern?
A: Dimorphic is two distinct forms. In ferns, dimorphism refers to differences in the size or shape between sterile and fertile fronds on the same plant.

Q: Are the brown spots on the underside of my fern leaf insect eggs?
A: The brown spots on the underside of the fern leaf are spores which is how ferns reproduce, they are not insect eggs. Sporangia is a specialized structure that holds the spores and develops in clusters called sori which may appear as dark dots, lines, or rusty patches and arranged in symmetrical or scattered patterns, or completely cover the lower leaf surface.

Q:What is the rusty dust on my fern leaf?
A: Ferns reproduce by spores. Sporangia is a specialized structure that holds the spores and develops in clusters called sori which may appear as rusty patches, black dots, or lines and arranged in symmetrical or scattered patterns, or completely cover the lower leaf surface. The rusty dust on the fern leaf are spores, part of the fern’s life cycle.
