Prevention
•
Use tolerant varieties such as Gihundo, Nyangufi, Majyambere and Reberaho.
•
Rotate wheat with potato or beans to break the cycle of the disease
•
Use manure 2 weeks before planting, 100 kg DAP/ha at planting and 50 kg Urea/ha at 4-6 weeks after planting
•
Weed regularly to reduce moisture around the plants
•
Avoid frequent movement into the fields to minimize the dispersal of the fungus by hands, clothing, or shoes
•
Remove volunteer wheat plants and wild grasses between seasons
Monitoring
•
Regularly check the field starting 2 months after planting.
•
Look for light yellow to orange-yellow pustules that are elongate and narrow, but varying in length
•
Observe pustules on the leaves, sometimes on the heads, necks and leaf sheaths
•
Absence of pustules on yellowing leaves implies factors other than yellow rust, such as nitrogen deficiency, waterlogging, age and drought
•
The pustules are often arranged into conspicuous stripes and their linear orientation between vascular bundles can progress the length of the leaf blade.
•
Take action as soon as symptoms appear especially in high-risk regions
Restrictions
•
Wear always Personal Protection equipments (PPE) and follow the instructions on the product label. Respect and follow laws regulating pesticides use in Rwanda.
